Toyota Land Cruiser rear bumper

So besides the Evo, my other interest is offroading. I built an old '76 Land Cruiser several years back and I'm getting ready to start another one. But since my wife and kids like going with me I needed something for all of us to fit in as well. So I have this '93 Land Cruiser for all of us. My latest welding project was a new rear bumper/tire carrier. The 315/75 R16 spare tire needed something beefy to hold it and it wasn't going to fit in the stock location under the rear of the truck. Also needed something to hold up under some pretty serious abuse that the bumper would get out in the rocks. Also needed some recovery point for those rare times I get it stuck.

Anyway, here's a few pic from the build process. After having all the steel bent.

Main bumper channel.

Frame attachment/recovery points.

Test fitting the channel over the rear crossmember.

Test fitting again after the slots were cut for the recovery points.

I didn't get any pictures of buiding the swingout tire carrier. It uses a double shear trailer spindle as a hinge with double roller bearings. But here are a few pics of the finished product.

Few more

Changed the mounting of the license plate and added a bracket for my hilift jack and a work lamp.

It's held closed by a simple but functional CarLane latch.

Held open by a gas strut.

The whole truck.

And a few shots of it getting "used"

How much was that piece of channel? Did you plasma cut or saw out those sections.

Turned out great. My friends and I have made some similar parts for the jeeps over the years.
