meth without tune.. question..

hi there

i just installed a meth injection kit on my evo 9..

i did 3 dyno runs..

- 1 without meth

- 1 with meth but without touching my tune

- 1 with meth and with a full tune

i'm glad to say that with the 3rd run, i managed to pick up 25whp and 30wtq.

however, what puzzles me is that on my 2nd run, my hp/tq figures actually dropped from the 1st run. my tuner says that this is due to the fact the meth makes the car run richer by 20% as meth is actually extra fuel.

is this suppose to happen normally? i thought i would see gains even just by installing the meth kit w/o a tune.

hope you guys can enlighten me here.. thanks!

I'm not speaking from direct experience, but I don't find that result surprising at all.

With out getting all technical I think your tuner is correct. Your basically making your car run rich until you tune for it.

Perfectly normal. Meth/Alky can richen you up 1 full point or more depending on how much you are spraying and what mixture you are running. You lost power because of this.

that should have been an obvious result of no tune...last time at the dyno however i did see a stock turbo ix make just under 400whp with a ridiculous 455 lbs of torque after a tune

Very easy to do with a huge torque spike and 30+++ pounds of boost with a stock turbo.

Methanol is not nitrous, it does not add power. It cools the intake charge and the methanol is also fuel as well. Leaner is meaner and richening up the AFR and slowing the flame front with a colder fuel WILL LOSE POWER.

Basically what everyone else said. Richer=safer less power and leaner=more power riskier

Although you lost power, (all circumstances equal) I believe that running meth on your pump gas map is safer. Colder temps in the cycinder is safer, along with adding fuel. With the introduction of methanol you now posess the ability to run leaner which could allow for more power.

The only way you can possibly make more power without any kind of tuning is raising the boost.

And that is not making the most of the benefits of meth. You can run leaner, more timing, and more boost.
So, tuning required.

What kit did you install and what is your meth injector size. I would upgrade to a M15 if you don't already have one

Yes making tq is something easy on a stock turbo! Crank up the boost and make tq The only problem is you will prob loose power above 6-6.5k

My question also, what size nozzle? And other than that, what everyone else said. That's how people can get so much power out of the X's without doing anything but tuning, they're basically so rich out of the box they leave alot of room for improvement in the tune.
