VP M1 Color

I thought this stuff was supposed to be blue? I'm pouring it out and its definitely got a yellowish tint to it. Got it from a sealed VP M1 container. Haven't ran the car with it yet, but hoping that switching to M1 will give me a bit of an edge over my previous 'brandX' methanol.

I mixed a bit; it did get cloudy but not until I added a fair amount, not a few drops.

I went ahead and video taped it Comments?

It should be clear most pure methanol is the only time they are blue is if has an additive or they have just added the color(red or blue are most common). As long as the container was sealed correctly it shouldn't absorb moisture lowering its purity.

Good video, I can clerarly see the cloudyness after mixing.

Possible the next test would be pouring some onto a piece of white paper and let it dry in room temperature, if there is oil or contamination, it will be left on the paper.

This will only work if the addictive has a slightly higher boiling point than methanol.

Methanol + water = milky

It did get warm as it was mixed, so that's a good sign...it also didn't really smell sweet or anything, it pretty much didn't smell at all...I have a bad sense of smell though... but it was def not blue.

did u get the whole sealed drum or was it siphoned out of a sealed drum?

methanol is completely miscible with water in any proportion. only when its contaminated with fuel/organics that you will form the colloid, making the cloudy/milky appearance.

a similar effect happens with absinthe(ethanol + plant extracts/organics) + water. the organics slowly come out of solution as water is added...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40k7SkXi3Rc

another possibility for discolored methanol is from the metal container rusting, but that will not turn cloudy when mixed with water.

^^^ Correct as always!

Sometimes the shops will use the same pump from Race fuels to methanols, which can be enough to contaminate a full 5 gallon tank of methanol, so be cautious to avoid that.

Good Luck!

When you mix water and methanol, i.e. a 50/50 mix. Is there any concern that they could separate in you tank and throw off your tune? I'm wondering if the water rises to the top.

^ I don't think so, they should mix together. Even if they don't, simply driving your car would stir it up

Well I mixed up a batch of 75/25 M1/water and put it in the tank with about 1/8 50/50 left in it. I did a few pulls to make sure the new mix was flowing through, and sure enough, AFR's richened up a tish (about .3-.5AFR) and the car feels like a monster, maybe a bit more than before. I threw a bit more timing at it and just like before it wants to knock on spool-up...if I start a pull at like 2000rpm and rev it out, no knock. So, I'll prolly just go back to my old tune and leave it as-is, the car feels fantastic.
