Adding external spray light for SMC controller??

I have the SMC kit and the controller in the little cubby by the hood release (I believe the normal location for this kit). The thing is since its not in line of sight I don't see the spray light coming on. Its not a dire necessity to see the light, but I want one that I can see up around my cluster or something.

So I am wondering if anyone has wired in an external spray light with this controller? If so, how did you do it?

This should be pretty easy, I wired up an input to the AEM to control the Alky turn on points on the EMS and then swtich on the indash IC Spray upon activation so you should be able to using the same wire to just jump into an external light.

I have listed out the diagram on this post. AEM Safegaurds for Alky/Meth Instructions Looks like the green wire is the one you will want to tap into with a 5v led or bulb.

Awesome, thanks for the post. What I gathered from you thread is that I get an led, tap the green wire and ground it and it should work? That was the basic idea I had going into this, I just wanted to be sure that was possible.

Yes that should work but please always remember to get out your ohm meter to do testing first just to be sure.

Ok, I will, thanks again. If I decide to make some cool led thing (Skycraft ftw), I will post pics or something.

Here is a crappy cell phone pic, when I get the other lights, I can take more pictures:

And GTVEVO, do you think I could wire up the power light too? The same way as the spray light?

Yes you should be able too using the White to confirm the pump has voltage. Thats also the exact same place I have my controler.

I spoke to Steve at SMC some time ago about this. GTVEVO has the correct operation of the green wire written out in his thread that he posted also.

You will want to run a new wire off of the Green wire on the SMC controller over to your ECU and have it ready. Tape it up for later use. This is all you need from the SMC kit. The action of this wire is that it is grounded when the pump has below 40 psi or not spraying. Once the pump comes up to pressure, the ground is then pulled away from the connection and power is feed into line and the controller to run the LED lights on the controller. The power feed to the line is about 4.3 +- volts so < 5 volts. I highly recommend that you start the car up and test the voltage in the line by pressing the TEST button on the controller and using an OHM meter before you go any further to make sure you have the correct line. The SMC controllers have changed several times so you want to be sure.
The green wire is grounded when the pump is off. When the pump reaches aprox 35-40psi the ground is lifted. So what you want to do is use a relay and have the LED wired to the normally closed post. When the relay is grounded(pump is off), the LED will not be powered. When the relay is not grounded(pump is on and making 35psi+), the LED will have power.

So your saying I have to use a relay and open the controller box to do this? Grounding the led then connecting it to the green wire sounds easier and like it will work.

No you do not have to open the control box to do this. You just tap into the green wire running from the control box to the pump. You want to use this wire as your ground for the relay.

Re-read my last post and the bold type in GTVEVO's quote again. You can't simply wire a LED to the green wire and expect it to light up when the pump is on. When the pump reaches 35psi+ it drops the ground on the green wire. So there is no longer a ground for your LED. You need a relay to turn the LED on. I hope that makes sense. If not let me know and I'll be more than happy to go into more detail.

You do not need a relay to do this but you can use one depending upon the light setup you want to use, use the white for your power check light and the green for your pump ON light operation.

Just use a normal ground or the system ground to ground your LED if need be.

I think I get it. I was under the assumption that once the ground drops, it turns into power. Therefore, you ground the led and wire the other to the green wire. When green wire drops and what I thought converts to +, light comes on.

I understand what you are saying now, but I don't know the schematics of how to do it. Which relay, exactly how to wire the relay, etc.. If you want to explain that, that would be very helpful. I'm not very good with wiring.

I have mine mounted under the center part of the dash just under the radio and above the ash tray. I can still open the ash tray and it allows me to always see the controller and easy to test it.

Yeah, my EBC is there. And I like how the controller is hidden anyways.
