Denatured alcohol = Methanol ???

Sorry for the dumb question but I'm no chemist.

I just came from from my local home depot which is like 10 minutes away from me.

I was looking for methanol but only found "denatured alcohol" in the paint section, which was selling for like $11.99 a gallon...

I just bought an SMC alky kit and was trying to figure out what kinda juice to run.

At this time i may just run windshield washer fluid, even water since its cheaper than the other exotic chemicals.

I am a chemist.

Denatured alcohol = Ethanol (grain alcohol) with just enough methanol added to make it poisonous for drinking.

Go with methyl alcohol. Higher alcohols like ethyl alcohol, isopropanol acts more like fuels rather than antidetonants.

alcohols are hydroscopic (absorbs moisture from atmosphere), so if you got a 55gal and using it yourself, make sure you screw the cap on tightly after opening.

Just so you know, denatured has an octane rating of 129 while methanol is 123 octane.
I think denatured has plenty of antiknock quality, if not you can run 50/50 mix with water.

DA = ethanol + minute amounts of fouling agents to make it "undrinkable" essentially it has the same octane # as straight ethyl alcohol. You get varying octane #s reported

Drives: the "Magnum"

Is the methanol from VP typically any better than the stuff you can get from local chemical suppliers?

Hey Trevor, you know anyone around us that has Meth? I cant seem to find anyone local enough for me to drive to and pick up and it sucks to have to pay the $30+ charge for shipping on small amounts like 5-10 gallons.

Have fun when ur kit malfunctions. I have heard nothing but bad things and besides HEARING I went through 2 controllers myself and the kit malfunctioned on me constantly. Its like playing Russian Roulette with the SMC alk kit. I have yet to hear anything about AMS kit though. I know there are people out there with a functioning kit with no issues but like I said its like Russin Roulette.

Well, for safeguarding I will be using an AEM EMS to protect me from malfunctions.

I'm getting all my mods installed and tuned by Precision Dyno in Philly the first week of December.
