ok well, since the install, the ECU has been flashed a few times thus far. A buddy has been helping me a lot with this. Before with a MBC, I was tuned at 23 psi and would taper to about 19.5-19.9 psi. So we kept it at that with the Grimmspeed BCS but now im tapering to 21.2. It feels really smooth. Were doing a few more things with it, and then ill add to my review. Just wanted to say that with as strong as it is up top, it feels like a whole new car.
Edit: Few hours later now, still workin on it but i think were done for the night. On the latest pull I hit peak boost at 3390 RPM. Oh, and virtually no knock. Ill try to get some logs posted up after work tomorrow.

Cool are you using as 3 port I assume so? Did you check for boost leaks before running your test? Do you think with some fine tuning you can hold 23psi all the way to redline or as best as possible? I'm looking for something to hold 26psi on pump all the way to redline and 30-35 on meth and taper to 29 by redline. I know my Red can do the boost but I'm looking for something to hold boost well as the engine will allow.

I am using as the 3 port. The boost leak checks etc, are all done. With fine tuning it will be really close, im holding boost really well, and with some more tweeks here and there ill be posting up some of the logs. I was impressed with my initial run with the setup.

That's definitely an unfounded claim at this point in time. No doubt the plug-n-play electrical connector and mounting is not available for any other BCS, but as far as boost control goes, you've got nothing that proves it works better than the GM. And its going to be a pretty tough challenge to beat the GM. It has the optimum flow rate (too much is not good) to provide a full range of boost contol, and the response time of the GM is very good. The best person you could send it to for real world testing would be Bryan at GST Motorsports. He's now done many many GM BCS installs and tunes.

I didnt want to say anything, but I was going to make a few comparisons to the GM.

What I meant by that statement is if this unit works as well in the Evo platform as the Subaru platforms that have already undergone extensive testing it would likely persuade people away from the old standby manual boost controllers...

Were you running a GM BCS before installing the GrimmSpeed?

I just want data I do believe it's possible that something can be made better then the GM solenoid hopefully GST can get a hold of one of these and do some testing.

* Faster response and greater flow than any other valve out there. (by more than 10%!)
|
Pretty bold statement. What other valve you referring to? Data to back this up?

I "tested" a car with this controller on it this week. Worked just like a Perrin or gm style as far as far duty cycles but the vacum fittings are very short and not too secure...Other then that it worked just as good as any I have seen..I really can't say if it worked any better as I feel any 3 port solonoid that I have ever used was more then adequate. Only thing I can think of to improve the grimspeed is to make the fittings a tad longer..

Its interesting to see how the product is advertised to be superior. A faster response time (i.e., less time for the valve to open) is always a good thing but there are diminishing returns. The GM BCS I tested was around 6 ms, and the MAC valve was around 4 ms. However, since both have fast response times relative to the duty cycle period of the Evo (~50 ms) BCS control system, its kind of moot whether it takes 4 ms or 6 ms. With 3-port solenoids, greater flow is good only up to a point for boost control. If the flow is too high, the upper range of usable duty cycle begins to drop (e.g., 80% duty can give nearly the same response as 100% duty with a really high flowing solenoid). A very high flow rate BCS also causes greater pressure variations in the WGA as the solenoid is cycled open and shut. This is what happened with the MAC solenoid that I tested.
As long as the Grimspeed actually did some performance testing and realized that too much flow is bad, it will be a fine solenoid, especially since the mounting and electrical connection are plug-n-play. The boost lines still have to be completely redone though. It would be great to see all the needed boost hoses (good quality stuff) and hose clips included with the Grimspeed. That would make it a true plug-n-play solution that would be very worth of purchase if the performance is good.

It seems very well put together, and the easy install definitely helps the noobs. But mechanics is mechanics...I just don't some claims.
