I had that problem with a 420A eclipse engine I rebuilt. The clevite bearings wouldnt fit flush with the notch. The bearing cap was fine, but not the block side. Made no sense. I searched all over and they were all the same. I ended up having the machine shop make new notches.

Call arp or clevite and give them the engine code for this older 4g you speak of. My ams stroker kit came with some weird bearings. A main bearing had thrust bearings attached to the side of it (one peice). Now this does work on either the block side or cradle I forget which one, but the other doesn't have any machined area for thrust bearings to sit.
