Drives: 2003 LAN EVO VIII

needs some info and help

hey guys im pretty new with turbos and AWD. i recently jst purchased an '03 EVO VIII. it has about 40,000 miles. well the car has been running fine, but couple of days ago, i noticed something weird. the car dosent have a mas air flow sensor (MAS) the coonector is just hanging from the side. there are no check engine light or anything and like i said the car seem to fine. i'm thinking either this car has an engine management or the ecu have been messed with. i was the ecu and it seemed like an ordinary ecu to me. also the car has an idle problem when the car is cold. how can i get this checked out and should i be worried? thanks for the info and help all of you can provide.

Your car can run without the maf sensor it will just run in Limp mode, but it should have one on it take a picture please of your engine bay.

If there is no maf you should have SES light on unless they removed the bulb
To check for the bulb being removed turn the car on and see if the SES light comes on for a second "just turn it in the ON possition" or check fuse's

The only way i can think why you wouldnt have a MAF sensor is if the car had EMS on it. but if the ecu is solid black its stock.

If you start the car, see if CE light blinks. If not somone removed CE light. Check the codes with scanner. Local autozone if you do not have access.

^^ picture of engine bay would be nice too..

Also if they did remove that CE light. They can get into some serious trouble if they remove that light, becaues of the simple fact of what your going threw, to hide problems.

Did you buy from private owner or dealership had the car?

Its silver take it out and look at it to see what brand it is and take a picture the stock ecu is black.

BTW dont count on it beeing EMS with those cheap ebay parts on the car i doubt they would fork over the bill for EMS

Take a picture from the front of the car so that we can see everything . Obviously who ever had that car just threw a bunch of junk on it from what it looks like. I wouldnt have bought that car how much did you pay for it and when?

Another big problem is that your factory strut bar is missing dude i would bring that back in a heart beat no telling what else is missing. COUGH FWD EVO!!! get that thing checked out man.

your car will run in lip mode if it notices that the Maf sensor is missing "on stock ecu" basically if im not mistaken it runs your car lean. your going to loose some performance but ehh id have to read up on it again.

i can tell by the wires across the firewall that it did have some sort of a piggyback on it... try dropping your glovebox and see if something is behind it... if you see double stick tape then thats where it was put.... i would also pull the front bumper off to see if they put the maf lower than usual for clearance issues...

i like how the battery is painted too, lol
