Custom made pills

I am in the process of making some custom brass pills for the turbo side of the boost hose. These pills are intended for ECU boost control. I am going to produce 20 pills. These pills are modeled on the Works boost pill, which IMO has an excellent venturi effect design. I will produce the following sizes:

# 65 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 65-64
# 63 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 63-62
# 60 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 60-59
# 58 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 58-57

I have used a number 65 pill on my Evo 8 and it allowed me to run the WGDC at the following level from 2250 rpm to redline:

92
72
54.5
52.5
53
54.5
54.5
55
57
58
59
60.5

This gave me a peak boost of 20.xx psi and held it to ~18 psi by redline. Here is what the boost table of 5 runs looked like.

I have also run the 65 pill with the following numbers in the WGDC from 2750 rpm to redline:

70
60.5
57.5
59.5
64
68.5
72
81.5
89
98.5

This gave me a peak boost of 21-22 psi and held that psi to 20-21 by redline. Here is what the boost table of 3 runs looked like:

I do not know the exact costs of these pills. I am guessing that it will be about $10/pill based on my conversation with the shop owner. These pills are going to be professionally made by a machine shop in SoCal.

I am going to keep one pill of each size for myself and probably sell the rest. I do not know how much to sell them for. It should be around $10 each plus shipping. I am just gauging your interest.

Sure, at that price I'd give one or two a shot.

Naj:

You dont have to make them in brass. I originally did this several months ago. Nylon rod works fine and cuts easily on a microlathe. No it is not affected by the heat. I have used these since January without any degradation. I used a watchmakers lathe. Make sure the outer diameter is >>larger than the ID of the boost tubing, as you need a very tight fit !!!!!

Yes the venturi design is better. I have used both venturi and straight drilled ones. The straight ones spike more and taper more.

You can virtually eliminate the spike/taper with them along with changes to the WGDC so they are a great mod. I hope you get some response....I posted here and on aktivematrix for anyone wanting them. $3 each in any size and got zero response.

No i am not considering making any ..thats before anyone asks. Naj is a great guy, whom I know from the SER forums. Get them from him.

Milburn,

Thanks for the kind words. I am making these mainly for myself, but since the cost of setting up the material and equipment is going to be the same if the shop produces 1 or 20, I thought I would make 15-20 and sell the rest.

The pills will have a tight fit in the hose. The model is the Works pill and that has a tight fit. The shop seems to know what they are doing. He is the one that was impressed with the Works pill and alerted me to the venturi effect.

I will talk to the shop tomorrow and post any updates.

Add me to the list please and I believe I'm in for the 65 pill.

What would another pill,Say a 60 get me in relation to the 65?

What size is the stock pill?

TIA

Indeed! We get these machined and have had a couple people scoff at the price. They don't realize that a custom machined pill like this with venturi design costs money in small batches.

As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the size of the orifice in the pill, the higher the boost you can run and the lower the numbers that you will need to run in the WGDC table.

The shop owner was telling me that drilling with, for example, a number 65 bit will get you results that are between 66-64 since the bit is so fine. I am thinking of changing the order to produce a size range along the following lines and make 5 of each size:

65
63
60
58

It all depends on what people want. I have had good results with pill number 65, but I have not tested other sizes. Some on here have with good results as well.

IIRC, the stock pill size was in the low 50s or high 40s. I do not remember the exact number.

How about 65 and 60. That should give plenty of range. 65 seems small (my homemade pill is around 60) but it's hardly precision-made.

I'm sorry but I never learned why a modified pill is needed, except for running boost higher than 22 psi.
I'm able to run 20-22 psi tapering to 18 with the BCS line pill removed.
From reading the thread on HOWTO control boost with the BCS the best reason I could find was from Jscbanks saying that having wastegate duty cycle values that are too high doesn't allow any room for adjustment so your boost won't be steady.

So I'd be interested, I just can't find the reason.

I have an update for you regarding sizes and the numbers I ordered:

# 65 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 65-64
# 63 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 63-62
# 60 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 60-59
# 58 ordered 5 pills. Range of orifice size is between 58-57

So I have ordered a total of 20 pills. I still do not have an exact price. It all depends on how much time it takes them to make the pills. My estimate is still @ $10/pill.

I will update the original post with these numbers

From what I can tell, removing the pill on the solenoid side will only allow you to spike the boost and does not really allow you to hold the boost steady. Changing the pill on the turbo side will help you hold boost better with only a slight hint of taper.

Also, as you mentioned, a small orificed pill on the turbo side will not only allow you to run less WGDC numbers, but will also make small numerical changes more impactful on your boost numbers.
