We use Pre-preg, Aircraft Grade Dry Carbon for our FSAE car. I cannot believe people are willing to pay the extreme price for a hood with this grade material, just to save 12 lbs.
4 tenths of a percent of the cars weight is what you guys want to save. Crazy...

i would agree that this hood is definately not for the daily drivers. it is a skin as is, has to be held down with fasteners, and is not at all practical. but if your building a race car and weight is important, then this part serves a purpose.
why did you use prepreg carbon on your FSAE car? why didn't you use fiberglas, or sheet metal? its cheaper...

We, along with nearly every other team use carbon for numerous reasons.
Its an engineering competition to showcase a teams skills working with materials used in motorsports.
Its a performance competition where weight really does matter, as we are limited on power by a 20mm restrictor.
Some teams create carbon monocoques for the chassis. Its the lightest, strongest way to build an open wheeled race car.
For example: TU Graz, a German team, built a car with F1 style suspension. Carbon Torsion bars, Carbon Flexure joints, etc.
For competition it is perfectly acceptable, but running a hood like this for anything other than a fully built racecar is kinda rediculous.

You missed my point... I was on UT arlingtons fsae team in 05 and team captain in 06. We used carbon for everything except the frame (we Even had carbon wheels). This hood was built for a race car, which is why it's light. Same reason you learn hope to use the stuff in fsae. We just took those skills and applied them to the Evo.
One thing to consider, Motorsports often times is used to develop parts for street cars, and some people wit street cars want their cars to be like race cars (light and fast). If people are willing to pay 1000 dollars fo a titanium upper intercooler pipe, I don't see why they wouldn't pay for a hood that is actually light weight.

We use it on our Race car. You use it on your Race car. When its a necesity, people use it. But, for a .4% weight savings on a street car, shouldnt that money go into a decent, well tuned suspension? Safety equipment? Driving school/track time? Etc...
Sure, there will be people out there always wanting that Bling-factor. Seriously, how many people in this thread who want a hood have even had their evo on a road course?
All im saying is, thats a great Race-spec piece you guys have made there. When prepping a Race car, this would be one of the last things Id do, but Id still do it. Just not to any iteration of a street car. a 17lb aluminum hood is way light enough for most applications.

If people have a money then they will buy it. Saving weight is part of fun imo, why you think people spend 1k+ for full ti exhaust? Why spend 3~4k for forged wheels? (on STREET vehicle) I understand where you coming from... but you sounds like, you are so hate to see this thread.
