i used JAM's balance shaft delete in my build http://jacksonautomachine.com/index....mart&Itemid=12... but in retrospect after hearing all the problems with oil pump failure im switching to the ams milled down shaft http://www.amsperformance.com/cart/A...mance.com.html

Yes, I thought about that too, I am suprised that no one has come up with an aftermarket solution in conjuction with this. I have yet to see something that increases oil pressure...

how about not even using a balance shaft delete kit...whats the BIG gain out of it anyway? There is a reason why the balance shaft is there is so you dont damage your engine. It offsets the vibrations in the engine, and 4 cyl cars such as ours tend to have second order vibration (vibrating at twice the engine RPM) which cannot be eliminated no matter how well the internal components are balanced, and thats why i have seen PLENTY of oil pump failures on evo's and dsm. So i would think twice about doing this when you only going to gain 5whp out of it.

Ah, nvmd... this is a good thread to those that want to learn more, just visit the AMS link above, makes complete sense, awsome part AMS, awsome. (No need to worry about fuel pressure with it.) I would like to see a review on it...

Balance shafts have nothing to do with balancing the internal components for reliability. The internals are already balanced. It is there for a luxury purpose of smoothening up vibrations from being felt.

Those that had pump failures were most likely running the stubby style kit instead of the long machined kit by AMS.

The AMS Race Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit is the only “no compromise” way of removing the factory balance shafts. Eliminating the balance shaft not only frees up horsepower, it also reduces the chance of belt failures ending up in catastrophic damage to your motor. In our experience, replacing the front balance shaft with a stub shaft will increase the chances of oil pump failures. This is likely caused by eliminating the support provided by the rear bearing journal. A stub shaft allows the oil pump gears to push apart and wear into the aluminum pump. Aluminum that is being worn away will enter the clean oil stream and contaminate the engine bearings. Eventually this can result in the oil pump seizing. The AMS shaft is machined to eliminate the counterweight while leaving the bearing journal in place to keep the factory engineered support for the oil pump gears.
