Mellon Tuning review of Buschur built 2.0, stage 3 head and BF272 cams
video http://www.racevideoforums.com/forum...k-ecu-mas.html
First I want to thank David, Nick and Jarrod for working with me on this new setup. Shipping was timely considering the extent of work that needed to be done and everything arrived safely without a hitch.
Here's my current Mod list so you can follow along:
BR HTA 35R 5 bolt .63 @ 30psi on 93 octane ~500awhp DLL prior to the new mods
PTE 1000cc injectors
BR 2.0L
BR Stage 3 head
BR BF272 cams
BR twin walbro fuel pumps
BR 3" tbe, test pipe, bullet muffler
BR 3" intake pipe + Mas adapter
BR UICP
BR Mini Battery
BR Race FMIC
ARP head studs
PPI ported stock intake manifold
PPI 65MM throttle body
Tilton Twin Disc Carbon clutch
Stock ECU/MAS
My tuning www.mellontuning.com
on the way:
BR COP
BR .82 to replace the .63
I JUST got it running last night and here are my initial impressions:
1. It's idling at 1200 with some nice lope, with the HKS 280's at 1200 you can barely tell it has a cam. These are definitely more aggressive. Sounds similar to a GSC S2. I'll get some video when I have more time maybe this weekend.
2. The tone is slightly different when doing part throttle, it has a meaner sound and there's a very slight vibration reminding you that you're driving a beast.
3. Idle with the AC is very poor, I need to work on that it's wanting to stall constantly and I know the super light weight tilton carbon/carbon clutch is amplifying the problem.
4. I did a single WOT pull last night and the AFR looked about the same up to 5500rpm but by 6000rpm the AFR went to 12.3 but didn't knock a single bit. Previously it would have knocked tremendously like that. I added 4 fuel from 6000 on up and it's still in the low 12's and IDC's are 86% with the BR twin fuel pumps and PTE 100cc injectors. I added 4 more fuel in the 6000-7000rpm area this morning and drove it to work. I don't have my laptop with me so I do some logging tonight after work most likely.
5. the low/mid fuel trims are still dead on.
6. it felt like it got into the power a little later than before, could be the cams or the tune, not sure yet. I literally spent 10 minutes on the tune because I spent most of my time repairing boost leaks last night. DLL confirmed my butt dyno readings.
7. The fact that it went super lean makes me think that once I get the AFR richer and back on target I may be able to add a little more timing and make more power.
8. I ran that one log through DLL and it looked almost exactly the same as the previous DLL I made before the swap was done. 500awhp and 400awtq on 93 octane at 30psi
I think I have 70+ miles on it now and so far I'm very impressed.

Great write up as usual Chris. We appreciate those. Im glad that you're happy with the new setup and im looking forward to seeing what you get out of your setup now.
You're also very welcome! We're glad to help out and we appreciate your continued support. I like seeing the car progress through the stages you've put it through.
Im looking forward to seeing another BR 9sec Evo sometime soon.

that's awesome chris, are you going to cruising at all? between all of the other BR pump cars and you i am leaning heavily towards that shortblock, head work, and turbo minus the bf cams. i would probably have to go with the s2's. glad to hear you got it all back and everything is going good

Why would you chose the S2's over the BF cams?
What are you running for tuning?
What turbo are you going to go with?

i told greg i would use them the next time i open the head. calm down jarrod
i will be getting everything else from you guys. Greg is a good friend of ours here at the shop, we built his one lap supra a few years back. plus we host all his websites, etc
i am going to keep the aem that i have in the car now and probably go with the hta 35 you guys sell. i want one of those buschur pump gas monsters the only problem i have at this point is that i have still not got the damn fp3065 tuned yet i wanna see what it does before i go any bigger. i may be happy enough with that. i have had the 3065 and other things on the car now for close to 6 months and still havent been able to make a pass in it. not many AWD dynos around here and the road tune it has is not cutting it. i should be making it to the dyno on the coast in the beginning of November. but i am sure something else will come up just like in the past

I'm very excited too. The plan is to max it out on 93 octane first. I expect a little bump in power over the previous mods but nothing too drastic. What I had before wasn't a bad setup, it's just that I wanted the ability to safely run more boost.

I think it should be close by then but it's not uncommon for me to go through 100+ revisions to the tune until I call it done when I make a turbo/cam change in the past.

I have some attainable goals setup for myself. stock ecu/mas, 10.99 @ 130+ on 93 octane. I think I could have done that on the previous setup but I didn't want to wear my new tilton clutch out prematurely. After I've maxed out the pump gas tune I'll start working on the c16 tune and see what the limit of the stock ecu/mas is. If I'm nowhere near the power I should be then I'll consider installing the AEM EMS unit I have sitting here and start getting familiar with that setup.

hey jospeh I'm not sure I follow... "are yougoing to cruising at all?" is that an event I should know about? I'm sure the GSC S2 will work well too but I can't ignore how successful the BR guys are with the BF272 so that made my choice simple.

it took the stock ecu awhile to figure out how to idle with the same settings I used for the HKS 280's but it's pretty much got it figured out now. The only sticking point is with AC on, it refuses to idle currently but I haven't made any adjustments at all to compensate. I literally fixed a bunch of boost leaks, did one WOT pull to check the AFR vs knock, added fuel and drove to work this morning.
I'm going to try to bust ass this afternoon and catch up on my tuning work so I can go out tonight and spend a solid 4-5 hours dialing in the tune and see what DLL shows vs the previous setup. It'll be interesting to see what the difference in power is with the same afr/boost but I think it's going to allow a little more timing based on what I saw last night. I can't believe it didn't cry about knock at 30psi o n 93 octane at 12.3 AFR...that impressed the hell out of me and suggests that the VE has been improved considerably and maybe there were some nasty casting flaws in the head that were causing hot spots. I'll fatten it up a bit and add a degree of timing at a time and see how it feels. I know previously on c16 I was able to add 4* of timing over the pump gas map at 30psi and DLL shot up from 500 to 565awhp so there's potential for sure with the stock ecu/mas.

Good to hear about that.
I'll be going that same motor/head route soon also, you picked a great combo.
Congrats!

Driving a Buschur built Evo = Chris, your set-up is going to produce serious power. Reserve your seat at the 9 sec club!

I really hope when you add some timing tonight... the power with just sky rocket up.. you added a fresh short block, supposedly more aggressive cams that "should" kill hks 280s (but who really knows because they have the same lift as hks 280s) and that fully built ported and polished head (this should by itself give you a good amount of power alone).. I hope we can see a lot more power soon. I know you have hit 525 on your old setup in cooler weather as well.. so I was thinking that would be a breeze with this setup... but who knows.. I am excited to see the results!! thanks for keeping every one updated Chris.. you are awesome (:
