You should stay away from the 99 model, way too many interior trim noises. Be aware the 911(996) is perhaps the 911 Porsche line up with the most galatical drop in value. Have you ever wonder why a 911(964) a 911(993) or a 911(plain) hold their value much much better? it is the acceptance.
The 911(996) was a true step back cosmetically. Please don't take this personal, I owned a 911 Carrera4 Cabriolet myself almost 10 years ago so I have nothing agaisnt you. The 996 Porsches were the "black sheep" of the line up, the 997 fixed the classic look and now the sales are up again and the retail value up as well.
If you are going to get a 911(996) please don't diviate from the 2002 model, I mean, don't get a 99-01, the imporvements made on the 2002 models were equal to comparing a 03 Evo to a 06 Evo 9 with Mivec.
Unlike popular believes, the Porsches are actually not expensive at all to maintain. There are tons of companies dedicated to sell Porsche parts, equal to Autozone, NAPA,Pepboys, etc.
For looks my prefer Porsche 911 it is without a doubt the 911(993) Carrera 4 S with the turbo package but N/A motor. For pure sports probably the 911 GT3 -RS. Take care and good luck!

for example... your saying I rather get this http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...5&aff=national than the one on my 1st post?
how about engine/drivetrain wise on 996 compared to 993?

Not sure if he gets onto EvoM anymore, but BIG3_ETR is big into 911s. He had a 996TT (~650 hp, I think?) and is currently in the final stages of a 997TT build.

My 99 996 was a great car. I never had any problems with rattles or squeaks. It was also lowered with H&R springs. The only porsche that I had that squeaked, was my 97 993. The windshield sqeaked and rattled it was a little annoying..

I think he said don't get the 99-01 models and get a 02+. What you listed is the 2000 model, so you should not get it.

2002+ for sure. as mentioined before the 996 series is the only 911 to not hold its value like the ones before (i think due to looks)
from my experience the front end tends to feel a bit light at speed espeically in teh rwd version. awd tend to feel a bit more planted.
in terms fo maintenance parts are expensive but thing dont tend to break all that often. sure if you service it at porsche dealer its gonna be expensive. but if youre buying used, might as well get a good independent mechanic.
i much prefer the 993 and love 997 cars (access to both n/a and a tt). whatever you buy, nothing feels like a 911. post pics!

I love Porsches, definitely a car in my future: I have it my Vision board a blk 911 Turbo(997) but I trully agree the 996 looks aren't fascinating, like the 993 & 997 bodies.....I would love the 993 from Bad Boys the movie hmmm yummy...lol....
The looks & sound of a Porsche gets me excited....

My bro has a 996, one of the pre-facelift ones with the J looking headlights and have driven it quite a bit before I got my Evo. They have rear main seal leaks, though supposedly they have a new install tool that fixes it. They also will run down the battery even if it is on a trickle charger after a couple weeks. FWIW, after I let him drive my '06 MR, he tried to sell his Porsche. Definitely try before you buy if you have never thrown one around. The 996/997 don't really have the ass happy feel of the older cars, but they still have great steering feel. I have driven a bunch of '80s 911s, and if it were my money I would get the 80's Turbo. But the newer cars will be better for picking up chicks (if you are that type of guy) as long as they don't know that it is not the current model.
Drop in value is both looks and it being the first water cooled one. A lot of people still have not accepted the change. Like the front engined Porsches, many were great cars but no "Porsche guy" would drive one so they did not hold value well

I never read much on the 996 transmission other than the Tiptronic was slugisher than a turtle. Many learnig driving modes but too slow. Nothing like the new PDK transmission that porsche offers now

Do a second round of reading. The first year 996 was hateable by all the owners, it was like the Indian(from India) railroad train, noisy and loose. Fixed by the following year.

Bullseye. That is what I mention. Worth having the 02' and up. The motor on the 02 simply screams. I made a very valid comparison between a 03 Evo 8 and a 06 Evo 9.

I swear I am not trying to sound like a smart ass or arrogant or cocky but I got this right years ago. The Porsche from the movie Bad boys is actually a 911(965) which is in essence a wide body 911(964).
