With that I think maybe the GX470 may be a little closer to reasonable, at 6500 lbs, it may be a good option!

get yourself a Touareg 2 TDI v6 .. Turbocharged diesel can tow around 7800lb. Was looking to get 1 for myself, but didn't want any luxury packages and they didn't have base TDIs.
Also I like Tahoes.

I don't see why not, evo is 3300 and trailer can't possibly weigh over 1700 pounds.

I appraise cars for a living, and trust me, the resale value is garbage on these(vw touareg tdi). I think youre on the right track looking for a V8 medium suv with a ladder(truck) frame vs unibody frame (car). Some of your options are a jeep commander, ford explorer, toyota 4runner, chevy trailblazer, etc

v6 TDI just came out, and its getting excellent reviews. I think you are confusing with V10 TDI which had horrible mpg, but was a torque beast.
I wouldn't go with an SUV that can only tow 5000lb . Evo + Trailer + equipment + hill, and you are in trouble.
