NJ Registered EVO gets window tint ticket in NYC WTF?

I got a ticket from a police officer in NYC for tinted windows @ the corner of 8th and 30th Street, he was using some hand held device.
My EVO is registered in NJ, with NJ plates.

Is this legal

i thought the cops couldnt hassle you if you were out of state since your car only has to comply with the state regulation where it is registered? correct me if i am wrong...isnt window tint illegal in jersey as well (not that it matters in this case)?

Well from the way I see it... My buddy got an exhaust ticket in MA while he was up here from MD and when I asked my dad about it (he's a city cop) he said it runs along the lines of the following:
Say MD doesn't have a seatbelt law... Does that mean he doesn't have to wear one if he comes up here? Laws are laws regardless of where you're from, technically he's 'at fault' for not checking NY's laws on tinted windows. Its stupid I know, but he can always fight if and will most likely win it, seems like the officer just wanted to be a pain. I've been through NY a couple times with various cars all with illegal tint and never have a problem, however I have been pulled over for exhaust but was let off because I was unaware of NY's emission laws.

Seems like hit or miss with these things... Same goes for I think CT's radar detector law (I think that's the state), you may be from out of state but they'll bag you none-the-less on it. My dad basically said its up to the officer to ticket you or not about it.

EDIT: Sorry if that's confusing...

What happens if you have a registered Florida car and drive to Cali?

There are no emissions rules in Florida or tint limits so will you get ticketed in California?

Ny statute states that any motor vehicle driven in NY must comply with the 70% tint law irregardless of where the vehicle is from.

you are sol as per the law.

the law itself is probably unconstitutional as you could argue that it interferes with interstate commerce (i.e. ct's ban on double trailers). I bet if you did argue that, it would win in court, but of course it would require that the state you live in, allows for tinted windows moreso that ny.

obviously the cop CAN write you a ticket for it even tho ur out of state. i've pulled ppl over with other state plates for tint, cause it looked like a shady *** car, didnt give them a ticket but its still legit reason for the stop. maybe that cop just had a hard-on for jap cars...who knows
