Out of the street tires I have used (bstone RE01R, Toyo R1R) my recommendation is RE01R. Not because they are the fastest but because they are the most consistent when beaten up at the track. Sure, the R1R are ultimately faster for 1 or two laps but they fall away and never come back, plus they wear very ugly and fast when driven hard.

On the bench racing front, I think those dunlops star specs has pretty much every other tire beat, tirerack says so, bunch of autox'ers say so. But one word of caution, some of the sizes are in very limited supply. I called up about the 285/30/18 and apparently there is 1 (one) tire in the entire country available, and the next production run doesn't start until 10/20.

Best of luck,

Not bench racing, but in timed nationally sanctioned SCCA competition, the Dunlops proved faster in AX. We were .8sec faster a lap on the Z1s compared to the REO1r.

The Bridgestone has a relatively soft sidewall. On the heavy Evo the RE01s gets overworked and overheated in the 245 size used in AX. In may work better in larger sizes, but the e36 M3s using 265s were having heat issues with the RE01s also.

The Dunlops are wider, stiffer, have higher heat tolerance, are less $ and good in the wet. Dunlop didn't anticipate how popular the the new Z1s were going to be, as AXers buy multiple sets, and sold out of the popular sizes. They restocked them last month.

Interesting about the 285/30-18s! They only list up to 265/35 and 275/35-18s.

I will ask them at SEMA about the new size.

that size was listed on tirerack

and when I referred to Bench racing I meant my own opinion.

This comparison on the other hand is not bench racing. Its pretty much the only publicaly available study of its kind.

Got ya

I guess tirerack removed the 285s off their site?

How do the stock Advans rank in that list? Are the Dunlops a good improvement over it?

Has anyone tried the Federal 595 RS-R?

I've run the regular 595's befere and they were a very decent tire though not in the game with most of the tires mentioned above. You don't see many Federals here in the US but when I lived in Australia a lot of guys ran them as theirstreet tires

I have Re01-R and don't mind them, but from what I'm hearing Neovas or Dunlops are for me in the spring. Probably Dunlops

I've used a couple set of the stockers on the track. They do pretty good really. The biggest knock against them would be the cost of buying them new. That and the 235 width as most of us go larger.
You could shop the For Sale forums though and find some deals. I've done that in the past!

Direzzas were a great tire. Honestly, they made the switch to the R888 not-all-that-fantastic. The 888s handle heat much better but the Direzzas gave me about 85% of the grip these 888s do.

Yes but they have a 140 wear rating so as I understand it they are "legal".

Neovas are the best, but the Dunlops Star Spec pretty close, unless you count the price difference which tells you that the Star specs are the best buy.
