Yeah I hear what you're saying as far as being quicker without sliding...I don't use handbrakes myself.

The courses here are tight though, and the fast guys here do use their hydraulic e brakes to pretty good effect!

Guy in this vid manages a 43 second run here - on the same course my best is a 46 second run (granted, I'd be considered a medium level SM car whereas these guys are more equivalent to F prepared). Still...prime example of the course layout we use here (note 180 turn and a 360 turn in there)...

Just curious if anyone else has experience - toying with the idea of installing a hydrauic e brake to compete closer but let's see.

Wow, now I see what you're talking about. I would call that a gymkhana. Very different than the SCCA Solo2 we do here.

Looks like handbrake turns are almost mandatory there. . .

If I were setting up a car for this I would run the EVO 9 1st gear with TRE's 3.83 final drive gear - that would get you 56mph in 1st gear @ 8000 rpm. You'd never have to shift . . .

Yeah the format we use is a little weird. Bacially the call AUtoX here the Redline Challenge and it's composed of two courses for each event - a longer, more open one similar to a Solo2 course and a tighter gymkhana style one. They add up your best time in each Test to determine the overall/class winners. The basic idea is to even things out between different types of cars (and we get more variety + more runs in a day as well).

Those tight courses look like fun when the guys are drifting all over like that but I can't get the stock e-brake to work on my car and on those short ones you're in first gear allll the time which is a little frustrating in an Evo.

Sure tests out the reflexes though

TRE gears etc. is something I'll consider for sure if and when I blow my diff or tranny. No rush though I assure you!

Might have to check the Rally forums for hydraulic handbrake info then. Thanks guys....

Rubbing issues are totally solvable - at least with 18s and 285/30/18s.

I think my Corsas are as big and fat as the Hoosiers but even if they're not you can get everythign to fit with the right spacers.

I finally put on some 15MM H&R jobbies, did a little extra fender modding and now - BINGO!

Here's what I did - same as EVOlutionary's pic but I also did some work on the rocker panels too since the inner edges tend to rub at full lock.

End result is that the front wheels do stick out a little but I've acid tested this setup and I get NO rubbing on the fenders bumps or in corners, NO rubbining on the fenders or the inner fender bodywork (as a result of all the hammering and cutting, particularly the rocker panel mods) and NO problems rubbing the frame in front of the shocks thanks to the spacers - I now get full, clean, lock to lock steering.



Better front traction too - in short - sweeeeeeet!

I think that biger/taller tires (such as 275/40/17s) could also be accommodated by using the same hammering/cutting methods and adding spacers to fit your setup - you may just need a little more or a little less.

I also did a little research on the best spacers to use - apparently the bolt on spacers are better since they don't but any extra stress on your studs like running a slip on spacer + extended lugs would do. The bolt-ons are also supposed to vibrate less than slip ons which I think is important (I added 72.6MM hub centric spacers to fit my particular rims and the car rolls perectly smooth at all speeds now).

Now hopefully this setup will do the trick until I can afford to get some ultralightweight wheels (thinking of Enkei RCT4s since there's a decent local supply).

You guys with the lightweight rims = lucky!!!!!! I tried lifting up an 18.10 inch Enkei RCT4 with a racing slick on it and it seems to weight HALF of what my Rotas do. I can only imagine how nice they'd feel...

I'm not totally up to date on SM rules. But are you allowed to hammer the fender seems like you did for clearance? I might be thinking about the SP rules. But I vaguley remember something about having modifications outside the hub centerline...

there is no specific SM allowance to bend over the body seams but there is an allowance to do minor things not in the rules that don't by themselves give a performance benefit or reduce weight.

so yes it's legal in SM.

The only reason I'd want active aero is so that later down the road when they are trying to ban something I want in SM I could pull out - "Hey, come on now. You allow freakin' active aero, but you want to limit XXX?!?!"

Really wanna piss some people off? Build a fully automatic ProSolo launch control system. Put a valve in the clutch line, have a camera watch the lights, and open the valve at the right time. Complicated, but watch people start *****ing when you cut .505 lights every time.
