Got Clunk?

Sorry guys if this has been discussed before, didn't really see any one thread that helped me get a better consensus on my issue so I though I would ask:

Is it me or is the TC-SST Transmission quite noisy especially in lower gears? I've been noticing that it has problems down shifting from 3rd to 2nd (get a bit of clunk/noise or bogging that can be distinctly herd when the radio isn't blasting!) especially when braking or coming to a stop. Ive had my 2008 MR now for roughly 2 weeks and have just over 1500 miles on it. Ive also been noticing that the center diff (or possibly rear) is noisy as well, especially when you tap/get on the accelerator in all gears (initial pressing of accelerator). This is not my first AWD/Turbo car (owned an Evo 8 and 05 STI Previous to this) and cant recall having this much noise from my drivetrain, diffs or Transmission. Any insights or other memember that maybe can confirm that its just the nature of this transmission due to its twin clutch system?

Thanks!

from what I understand the clucking seems normal, at least that's what many magazine reviewers noticed with these type of transmissions, even for other cars like the nissan gtr that use the dual clutch setup

yes it is normal, I hate it. If you want a real hard bang slow down for a stop sign and hit the gas before it has time to engage. It will send a chill up your spine. My new method is to put in sport mode and move the stick to manual mode. seems to downshift better than the auto. I also put mine in s-sport mode auto often and beat the ever living shiiiit out it out of it for clunking. My goal is to get at least one free tranny under warranty. btw get a custom tune, car is a mutt without it.

I get the nasty clunking as well, the same as you described. Its a lot louder with solid diff mounts installed and really sucks. Some days it isnt so bad, but there is the odd day where the tranny decides to be temperamental and clunk and jerk on every downshift from 4-3-2

This has been discussed before. A lot of clunking and jerking. Normal, I guess.

On another note, when you drive it in manual mode, do you let the transmission downshift itself, or do you downshift yourself when coming to a stop?

I find the clunking more in "normal" manual mode than in "sport" manual...Sport shifts faster and smoother it would seem.

The thing that bugs me with twin-clutch transmissions is the gear noise (especially noticeable at low speeds)...sounds like a straight-cut gearbox...

The "clunk" is an unfortunate feature that comes standard with dual-clutch transmissions. It sucks. I had a 2008 VW R32 with DSG. Same clunking. I've driven every Audi and VW car with the DSG...same clunk. Apparently the same thing happens on the Nissan GTR, Porsche cars with PDK (same as DSG), the M3 with their dual clutch. I found it so annoying that I had to get rid of my R32. I don't know if there is anything that can done. Possibly a reflash of the transmission computer could possibly smooth things out, but I'm not sure.

I now have 4800 miles on my MR and I am familiar with the clunk. I began driving it in Normal Auto, switched to Sport Manual for a while and now I'm in Normal Manual. It seems to me that driving in Sport mellowed the transmission out a little and now Normal mode is pretty smooth. Every now and then in slow traffic I'll go to Auto and it will feel like I've been rear-ended when shifting between 1st and 2nd. It also seems that Normal Manual mode shifts more decisively after some break in.

If I drive it in normal its usually in AUTO. I usually do not down shift, and allow the TCU to decide when its going to down shift as I approach a stop. Im starting to learn though if I actually down shift myself (treating it as if it were a manual) then I can minimize clunking at low speeds. Im just glad its common and not just my car!

Thanks for everyones input. Appreciate it.

I definately hate it when you are rolling to a stop, then you accelerate before you stop. It engages instantly and jerks the car pretty good. I've gotta be careful when Im driving with my little baby in the back seat (shes 1 month old now).

I have this too excatly as a few have described here. I heard some guy on another forum got a flash that dealt with the AWC when he took his car in for that fuel line recall. I will follow up with him and learn more about this.

Update:
Only certain Evo's in certain states get the AWC reflashed. GSR/MR because both vehicles have S-AWC. It's to reduce the chance of an AWC motor failure in cold temps. Does not impact engine ECU.

Going in tomorrow to have the recall repaired. Will speak to the service manager about this.
