Drives: the Pace Car

I rather like pitching the 8 sideways on a gravel road. <shrug> Paul's car is way more "show" than most on this list (not that there's anything wrong with that, and I'm not implying it doesn't "go" either...), so I can see why he wouldn't want to get it dirty. Mine on the other hand HAS flown through the air for an unnatural distance, so no biggie here. Unfortunately my schedule these days doesn't allow much time to play, not to mention the fact my car desperately needs a LF wheel bearing, tranny rebuild, and new fluids. None of which I feel like doing.

And Paul, your consumables number rival mine, WTH are you doing to your car??? There isn't a car in this list that has done more autox/drag/roadcourse events than mine. Good grief man!

Heel - I was not at Putnam. "The Man" has put it to me this year something fierce, so the car never made it on track at all. Last event was Putnam in October of '08. Hell, I only drove the Pace Car twice this year. With the band taking off it makes more sense to 'make' money on the weekends instead of 'spending' it, but I do miss all my track friends...

Greg.....I drive the wheels off of it!

Actually the car has seen the Drag stirp, AutoX and a while ago, dare I say....street race. In addition, I drive the heck out of these back country roads in KY. The car has 86k miles on it and runs like a top.

Stock clutch(for me) lasted about 12k (I've had 2 of them). Then I put in a Clutch Masters stage 3 kevlar. Good clutch, but my power exceeded it's capability pretty fast. The Exedy HD twin I have in it now seems like it should last forever....Awesome clutch.

Advans only lasted about 9k miles. Other tires I've had usually are pretty worn out each year. I don't like to drive on balding tires and I don't really buy long lasting ones either. I now have a winter set of rims and tires so hopefully my summer tires will last longer.

Stock brembo pads don't last long either. First set wore out and trashed my rear rotors. ( I didn't realize it until it was too late. Project MU pads tore up my rotors (The pads don't cool well and cause warped rotors). Now I have Hawk HPS pads and Rotor-Pros rotors. Wonderful combo.

As for the tranny....8s have problems with 5th gear grind. I had is severe just before I deployed (too much street racing I would assume) so I sent it off to Shep for their full treatment. Hopefully I won't have to do that again.....1200 bucks for repairs and a new case was a hard hit on the wallet. (Fed-Ex droped the tranny and broke the case). GRRR

Heck, then we can get into my chainging of the fluids consistantly. Every 5k miles for the oil, 10k miles for the diffs and tranny. Every 25k for the coolant. Flush the brakes and power steering fluid every other year...This car is a mechanics dream....lol

Yes, I am that ANAL.

Like others on here have said....I got the car to drive it....and drive it like it was meant to be driven. (no dirt though)...Yes, she is pretty and I would hate to have to get the front bumper painted a 3rd time for rock chips.

As I am sure most of us will agree.....the more you "beat" her....the more she likes it. Meaning that if the car is putz'd around it will start to run like crap.

Best part of all of this is that I am the one who has done all of the driving, mechanic work, and tuning on the car.

Greg....if you buy the parts....I will do your repairs for you. I have a lot more time on my hands than you.

after my latest Putnam track day, I now have 5th gear grind pretty bad, and it was grinding above 6k in 4th as well..... so whenever I move back to Ohio I'll have to have the tranny rebuilt, but for now it's just sitting, so no need. Since I don't drag the car/launch it, I feel like I don't need a "reinforced" build, but more so just a rebuild, what's the most economical place to have it done?

Obviously shep is the go to guys, but is there anyone that's cheaper who will do just as good of a job rebuilding, or do I need to just suck it up?

p.s. is it gay that there's nothing I miss more about home than my car? I think so.

Shep or TRE are the places to get it done. I am sure you can get it done elsewhere but I am certain that other shops won't do all of the technical service bullitin updates and oil passage mods like the race shops will.

In addition, Shep can put in a double syncro 5th to eliminate the grind. I wish I would have done it, but a new casing took presidence.

It is odd that an 06 has 5th gear issues. I thought only the 03s had the problem.

I know how you feel about missing your car. Try being deployed for a year and a half without it.

well when I was at Autobahn in July, there was a kid with a GG IX, and he asked if I had "the infamous IX grind"? and I said, as a matter of fact I do, and he said every IX gets 5th gear grind, so that's when I found out it was apparently common.

If I just wait .5 second shifting into 5th (letting the rpm's drop to 2500 or so), then there's no grind, but any spirited shifting, it's quite ****ty....but so was slamming into a wall haha.

and yeah man I can't imagine being deployed that long, it's only been 10 days for me so far haha, but I'm moving back home this winter for a few months literally just to enjoy my car in the snow/make a well produced snow video since I now have a few friends down to get nutty in awd cars, instead of just me.

Buschur also does them...called the Bushwacker. When its time for a new clutch I plan on getting the tranny rebuilt.

just got in internship in downtown Manhattan, so I don't know if I'll be home for this winter snow video....

Someone should drive my car to me, and I will literally just take off work and leave immediately when there's snow in Cincy :-)

Any of you local guys (May be specific to IX's/2006) have any past issues with a pulley making noise in the timing area?

A couple weeks ago I researched this some and someone even posted a youtube video with an identical noise to what I have. The noise is becoming more regular where it seemed to be intermittent at first.I am pretty sure its a bearing on one of the pulleys and at idle you can hear the periodicity.

I guess I'd like to see if any of you guys with IX's have had this and if so what the problem was.
