Using cvt tranny to slow down

I assume the L gear is suppose to be used in mountain driving. While going down a mountain and using the tranny to slow down, I was smelling a burnt smell. Does this mean the tranny was overheating by using the L gear too much?

Some of you are going to say it's your breaks, the breaks were barely being used.
