CVT MODE; When to shift gears?
I have a 2009 Lancer GTS with CVT transmission. I was wondering if anyone knows how to (or if there is even a way) properly shift into gears. Like is there a certain time when to shift or is it at the driver's discretion when to shift?
I've seen videos on youtube discussing it but Im still lost.
When I shift to the left on the gears, I usually change gears around or right before 3000 RPM? If anyone has any suggestions or knows the proper way to please let me know. Most of the time its in regular drive mode but once in a while I shift the gear knob to the left and I just want to make sure when I do use it, Im actually using it right.

I have driven a few of these, the best way is to follow what the computer does, youll never beat its fuel savings. The only thing your doing by shifting yourself is wasting gas, and entertaining yourself. I honestly believe the new cvt trans will always out shift a newer driver. Only a prof. driver on a track could use its benifts to the fullest.

I see what your saying. Yes, your right, Im only eatting up more gas by changing it myself. I do tend to view the instrumental panel when I have it in the mode where it shows you how much gas your actually consuming and your average speed along with miles. Is that what your talking about when you say, "follow what the computers does"

while in gear manual mode there is a full engine to Tranny lock up. while in D mode there is a bit of float. Basically you want to shift at 2800 or lower. this is where the peak tq comes into play. ideally shift at 2500 will provide a comfy quiet seemless driving.
There is a shift controller in the works that will allow you to customize your shift patterns but I can not say anything beyond that. When i get a working USA model to test i will post my results.
CVT Zombie I think is the name. From Japan though

I shift around 2500rpm on normal driving. Entering the freeway 3000 rpm. When im late to class or work 3500rpm getting it up to 60 mph in seconds is priceless.
P.S.
I used to drive stick before. so im putting my old shifting habit to my CVT.

Also good comments above. But even following to my best to match the computer shifts, I fail cause its more to shift my way. Cvt with paddle shifters owns any convetional standard.

from what i keep hearing about the shift controller in the works, the 6 gears become 5 and a 4 speed mode. making shifting a little more normal.

so would reducing gears give you better pickup? i dont wanna say more hp..but would you get a lot better low end tq? what is the benefit of making less gears opposed to adding another gear?

i would guess reducing gears will reduce your pickup, however im sure it saves gas by keeping ur car's rpm from going up fast and keeping it down, also makes ur shifting smoother
more gears = faster ur rpm goes up and you'd want ur rpms to reach ur peak hp/torq asap for a better pickup and for that u need more gears
i mean you dont see them super cars like the GTR having 4 gears ^_^

from my understanding, in its current logics, you achieve more acceleration gain with fixed shift points. The logics currently have a Anti Vibration algorithm to it which strategically cut power output or input tq (not sure). This happens the most during a continuous fixed RPM operation. In theory you are capable of producting and keeping more power with manual mode operation with fast shifts and gear lock ups. a 4 gear shifting system if done correctly can payoff especially in turbo application.
the new gears Gear 1 and 4 will actually represent old gears (1 and 2) and (5, 6, D7) respectively in a variable mode. so this way you dont have to worry about losing control not having a LSD in the low gears. and in the final 4th gear it will return to a variable operation.
all that make sense or do you want me to explain it again? I think i might have lost a few people?

I feel like its a gimmick, shifting a shiftless/gearless transmission
