doing a drain and fill, ATF

my gf has a 03 OZ rally, AUTO, bought new and now has 48k

i've been doing all the maintence on it. the car never was serviced at a dealership. Just mainly by me. I've just been doing oil changes every 3-5k, normally when i do my stuff. I just did its first drain a fill, i know its suppose to be at 30k but yea. pulled the plug and there was too much metal shavings on the magentic plug. i'm used to seeing the grey scream like and some metal but this has a lot. i've pulled out oil pans with 150k and seen cleaner magnets then this. Either way fluid was brown with a trace of red. I filled it back up with 4 and a little more, used the rest to top off the PS fluid.

now my question for all you guys that did the drain and fill was how bad were your drain plugs and at 48k was it suppose to be brown already. its just a DD street driven car by a female. No abuse was ever made.

Well I've been planning on changing mine for a while now... It's a reddish brown, but then again I have over 141k on it

i understand the more red is good. i was talking about the drain plug with the grey slime and metal shavings.

the car wasn't slipping or anything really. maybe a harder shift on a highway exit going up hill and whats all.
