shifting times

hey guys

so up until recently i have been shifting my gears at around 3 1/4 RPM to save gas (has actually been very effective at saving me gas). now when i come to long straight aways or just feel like going fast i stay in gear until about 5000-6000ish RPM to see how fast i can get (sort of testing the bounds of my cars speed). i was wondering, is this stressing my gears/ car too much? or is it ok to do this at least every once and awhile? ive noticed the shift knob feels like its more lenient and moves around the boot with less force back on my hand.

thanks

no it won't hurt anything. Is your engine and transmission broken in yet, how many miles do you have?

It's fine. If the car couldn't handle 5k rpms, then the redline would be at 4k. Know what I mean?

exactly what sheep said... if the car couldn't handle 5.5K RPM the redline would be much lower

Drives: 2008 Lancer GTS 5-speed

I shifted at 3K RPMS until it was broken in, and shift at 2.5K RPMS when I want to save gas. When I want to go faster I shift around 5K RPMS I try to treat her nice

I don't normally watch the Tach. I usually listen to the engine to determine when to shift. Just by listening and feeling the acceleration, you can tell when the engine acceleration curve starts tapering off. That's when I shift. However, first gear is a bit tricky if your flooring it. I'll glance at the Tach if I'm flooring it in 1st.

true, but because of its low gearing it's sometimes difficult to "feel" and hear the acceleration taper off at high RPM...
