What rattles? Where does the sound come from? Is there vibrations too or just a sound? If you can drive you car and shift, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that nothing is "shot". Cars make tend to make lots of rattling noises, as the entire thing is held to together by screws and bolts that come loose over time.

easy thing to check out, get under the car and make sure the heatshield is not hitting the exhaust or body, that is usually the cause of rattles on lots of cars especially in tha manner you described

I got my lancer 3 weeks ago and it's doing something similar. Not so much a rattle but like the shifter is catching something. Doesn't always happen, but yeah 1st to second and sometimes 3rd. This is with the clutch fully engaged to the floor, so the gears aren't touching, it feels as if its catching right under the shifter.
I'm going to take mine in but I was wondering if you herd anything about yours?

Is it tough to get into any of those gears when it does make that noise? Linkage binding or more likely just metal on metal contact from what was already mentioned...the exhaust heat shield.
