Need help using the Sport/Triptronic mode on the CVT

I've had my Lancer (CVT) for almost 5 months now, and have yet used the sports mode. Well I figured I'd give it a shot yesterday and gave it my best. Having never drove a MT, the whole process of shifting gears myself is foreign to me.

Now, I will say, the CVT is very forgiving if you mis-shift or don't down shift, however, I want to become pretty proficient with using Sports mode. I read the manual, however I could not find a "template" to go by, in regards to gear vs rpms. Therefore, I was wondering, what RPMs do you guys suggest that I shift?

From 1st-2nd, I shift around 2k-2.5k For the rest of the gears, I shift at about 3k. Does that sound about right?

Another problem I have is knowing when to down shift. Say I'm in 3rd @ 2.5k, and I'm coming to a stop sign....I normally down shift to second once I hit 1.5-2k rpms. Then I will down shift to first when I come to a complete stop.

Am I doing this correctly? I definitely don't want to screw anything up on my car.

Also, when driving via sports mode, I can hold the right paddle in for 2 seconds, and it will throw the car back into auto, correct?

Thank you!

youre doing fine. not much to it.

you dont even have to down shift if your going to complete stop. It does it for you.

yes when you hold it for 2 seconds it goes back to auto.

It only switches back to auto if you have it in Drive. If you have it pushed over into the tiptronic mode, it's not going to go back.

As for shifting, you can do it whenever you please. I normally shift around 3 or 3.5 for all gears, and I never downshift, I just let it do it for me.

If I'm using the manual mode, I don't shift until the rev limiter hits. But we all have a personal style.

Seriously, though - no matter what, auto mode will always offer a better gearing for MPG (because of the gear ratios available to the CVT function). If you're trying to conserve gas by watching your RPMs, just click over to D. Manual mode is strickly for fun, if you ask me.
