New HU question
Ok guys i am about to buy a new head unit for my car. I am deciding between the Kenwood DNX 7100 or the DDX 8019. I am more inclined to go with the 8019 because i can live without the nav sistem, but the RCA outputs of the 8019 are high voltage (5V) and i was told that it could damage the stock amp. I have the soundgate plug so i will be using the stock amp and speakers for the time being. Does anyone knows for real if the high volts rca could damage the amp??
thxs for the replies

I'd like to tell you it won't damage the stock amp, but I can't say for sure. My HU outputs a max of 2V at the RCA preouts.
Try asking a reputable car audio shop what they think. There has to be something you could run inline with the signal to drop it to <2V if 5V would be a problem.

Or email the manufacturer about the issue.

im sure you are not the first person to look at this set up, google that myth,
check with crutchfield, talk to your local sales teams,
research my good man.
I doubt it will damage it though.
but thats just my 2 cents.

OK, after exchangin a couple of emails with the people @ crutchfield here is their answer.
Hi Eduardo,
Thanks for shopping the Crutchfield web site.
I would be glad to help with your question about installing the DDX8019 into your '05 Lancer. The technicians said the high voltage preamp output will not hurt the stock amplifier if you did find an integration harness. They had never seen an integration harness that will adapt the din style cable used in the lancer to an aftermarket receiver. The other concern is I only show 2 ½" of available mounting height available in the '05 Lancer, not the 4" height required for a double din radio. However, if you were able to locate the appropriate double din sized mounting kit and amplifier integration harness, the install should be no problem and will not harm your factory amplifier
So i just wanted to post it here for future references. Thnxs to all for their imput.
I love this place!!!!

They've never seen the double-DIN kit or the Soundgate adapter harness, but they're sure it won't harm the stock amp. I'm not sure how far I'd trust that.

matute, try it in your lancer and post the result, if that set-up fried your amps I will look for a less pre-out voltage!!
But anyway, thanks for the info!!

I think i will do that Boushard and if it frys my amp i'll PM you so you can send me yours. LOL jk. Anyways here is Kenwood's answer.
BTW I already decided to do it regardless so i will do it and post up whatever happens.
"No it should not damage it, the worst that could happen is that you exceed the input voltage of the amp and experience "clipping," where the input voltage "over-runs" or over-voltages the input of the device. Check out the specifications of the device to see if this possibility is likely. Please feel free to contact us again with any additional questions. OK guys I finally received (and installed) my new headunit today.
I decided to go with a single din unit from alpine, but it has high voltage rca's.
Got it installed in 15 minutes and no problems whatsoever.
So it is confirmed in case anyone (boushard) wanted to know.
