My Follow Up To Ebay Headers - - From a Mirage 4G93 Review + Pics

Okay, well as some of you who have been members for a longer time may know, Back in February I purchased a pair of 4-2-1 headers off of ebay. They claimed to be Magan Pro Racing headers for a Lancer Cedia in Japan; and the guy said the car had the same 4G94 SOHC engine. After talking to another member at the meet though who had bought Mirage headers, we both had run into the same problem. Cost in mind; I bought the header and the downpipe for 75 dollars Shipping brought it to 110.

The headers were 4-2-1. They appear to be similar headers as the chrome ones that you can find on ebay. I had to get some custom work done to these. An O2 sensor needed to be welded onto the downpipe, the O2 sensor had to be extended using speaker wire from a radio store, and the downpipe had to be extended 1.5 - 2 inches near the flange where it bolts up with the header. The downpipe was hitting the oil pan and would have caused the oil temperature to overheat constantly. These mods cost me roughly around 80 bucks to have done at a muffler shop, including installation. However, gaskets for this were hard to come by and I still have a minor leak where the header and downpipe meet. I'm going to have this welded together soon because I'm tired of putting muffler mender on every couple days.

The gains for this were highly noticeable once the O2 sensor was extended (was running pig rich for not having it connected.) Most of the kick is between 3k Rpms and 5500. It continues to pull after 5500 but not as hard. The torque doesn't feel like it drops by much, but it stays near its peak and continues to rise. My mods at this time are

Intake/Header/Downpipe/Exhaust/Piggyback.

It made my exhaust moderately louder, but not by much. There's more airflow coming out of it but with my resonator and the muffler, it stays nice and deep. Video coming soon of exhaust. Overall, for me the money spent on this was worth it, as I have a working header and downpipe. It peaked midrange torque and hp, rather than high end. If you are considering getting a header though; I would recommend getting one from Kamikaze, RPW, or RRM. If budget is an issue, find a used Kamikaze. There are companies supporting these products, and I'm on my own. If I could have done all this over again, I would've just waited for a used item or a group by. The gains were worth it, and I'm glad somebody finally tested this, but it was a lot of stress. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Wow those rusted quickly! And you lose some of bolts off the block? Do you have any leaking there? Anyway, for $190, not too bad.

I am the other lancer he is talking about.... I had purchased mine off of ebay as well but mine were made by ractive it is for the 4G93 block not ours but it bolts up with and identical bolt pattern. The other notible difference is that the ractive header has a very nice chorme finish and doesnt rust.Bad news is i had to take them off because there is no O2 bung and the down pipe provided was all jacked upand did not fit at all so I need to get one Fabbed. The exhaust shop said it will be for less than 100 bucks so not to badi guess....

Note: No leaks to where I broke the bolts off the block... just where header/downpipe meet.

I used an alphawerks stainless header for a mirage. Completely cut the bottom and and spun it 180 degrees, rewelded it, had to extend the the o2 sensor wires. Ended up having to put in a mil. I heated the bottom bend to give about an inch clearance in my oil pan. Best of all its stainless and doesnt rust. I added a little brake fluid to the pipes to make them blue. Overall I am happy with it. I have had it installed for almost two years. I am happy with it. THe RRM piggy back really complements the header.

here is the pic

Could you take a pic of where the o2 sensor was welded. I have Kamakazi Headers and I think I run rich as hell also.
