If your hearing a "resonant tone" then your airbox isnt sealed properly at the bottom. When you removed the stock filter the clips that lock into place on the bottom of the air box probably came "unlocked" causing the resonant tone you are hearing.
I know this for a fact because I am on my 2nd lancer (have 08 and 09) and my 08 was real loud after the oil change place checked my air filter, I never bothered to look into it. I recently got the k&n filter for my 09 and i put it in (in my dark apartment parking lot) and i heard that resonant tone. I was on the way out so i didnt bother to check it.
When I took the stock air filter to my dad (who now owns my 08) to put into his car I installed it with better lighting and noticed that his air filter wasnt sealed properly so i removed the old one which had 32k miles on it and put my stock one from my gts. once i fixed the air box and drove around in it there was no resonant sound anymore.
I then went to my gts and did the same to my k&n and the sound was gone.
Fix your filter before more dirt gets in there, else you will be buying a k&n filter cleaner/oil kit in about a month.
but better to have a clean engine than nice sound. I appreciate the heads up. Time to look for an exhaust to make up for the lost note. any suggestions? im kinda on a student budget but I love to show the brands on my car.. max spending limit is $350 any thoughts or ideas are appreciated
