Homemade Short Shifter?
I am not sure if this is where this thread should go or not but here goes...my friend took his stock manual transmission shifter sawed off about 3 to 3 and a half inches to make a homemade short shifter...will this work like a real short shifter or will it just look shorter?

No this will not work. It does not reduce the throw of the shifter at all. Only changing the point where the shift happens will shorten the throw. Your friend just made a "shorter shifter" not a short throw shifter.

to make the throw shorter you will have to chop off somewhere under the metal ball part and weld in about an inch of rod and then maybe brace it with some steel pipe over the join so it dosnt snap or something...... or you could just buy a short throw shifter..

To answer your question. Yes - the eBay short shifters work. Streetcustoms is a source most get theirs from. Its just a solid piece of metal - nothing that can't really work. Otherwise, any shifter from Lancershop.com, or Kartboy, or B&M or even Perrin all work. Its just a matter of price and about how much they actually reduce the throw.

For the record, I held my B&M shifter next to my stock one, and NOTHING IS DIFFERENT BELLOW THE BALL PART, so I dissagree with the above flames (and I usually don't disagree with those people). There are shifter kits that actually relocate the shifter pivot point, but all the Lancer ones I have seen do not.
Now on to the original question, the problem with that is that you can't shave 3" off a stock Lancer shifter because there is a curve in it about 1" from the top. Besides, even if you could, while the concern would not be the new throw (which btw is just a term for the distance you have to move the knob, so a shorter stick does shorten the throw automatically), I WOULD be concerned about the weighting, which is what makes a shifter smooth and precise, or the shape of it, because what angle the stick is determines where the knob is located, which affects how it reacts to the natural movements of the human arm, which is how a stick was designed in the first place.

i believe the kartboy one moved the pivot point a lil but i installed it so long ago i cant recall... also if you take a saw to it... you cant screw on the knob. THE BEST ONE is RPW... not only does it shorten the 1-2 3-4 throws but it also shortens the 2-3 4-5 throws.

Well, you could rethread the stick. Any thread pattern would do if you were using a universal knob, too. But most shifters for the Lancer don't move the pivot point, because you would have to replace that entire enclosure to do that. Otherwise, the nylon assembly would not fit back on over the shortened (or lengthened) shifter. But who knows, maybe Kartboy did exactly that, but it's a lot more parts and a longer install than the metal sticks most of us buy.
