crazy tick/ rattle

ok i know this isnt the right section to post this in but ive already posted in troubleshooting twice to no avail.

ever since i installed my header on my 02 es ive had an odd ticking that starts at about 2700 rpm and stays at a steady speed till about 3300 then gets very rapid. ive had many people tell me its the lifters ticking cause there dirty. well ive tried every cleaning product known to man it hasnt stop. and i dont hink its the lifters because wouldnt the tick be the loudest at idle?

i need some help its driving me nuts

edit:sorry i forgot to mention that when its in park and i rev it i can barely hear it but when its in gear driving its alot louder

No lifters are not loudest at idle, the only real way to clean your lifters is to take them out and clean them. However, is there a way you can post something to let us listen to it? We had a guy not too long ago that had everyone telling him it was lifters too, all his friends, his mechanic, etc. He posted the sound and found out it was a rod knocking. Not to scare you but just in case.

also, you mentioned you tried cleaning products...try using deisel fuel

well im actually at school right now and dont have the means to record anything but as soon as i can i will.

i know for a fact its not rod knock my compressions all good im not feeling any loss of power and ive encountered rod knock before and this is nothing like it haha

This kid said the same thing lol. Im not saying you dont know at all but that kid only had like 15 less compression on the bad rod than the good ones. Not even noticeable. Oh and do you mean take out the lifters and clean them with diesel?

yea, the handbook says to like submerge them in the fuel and (correct me if im wrong) depress the bearing inside with a pin to clean the inside out as well...i need to do the same to mine cause i have that "tick" too

ok so lets say it is rod knock wouldnt it do it all the time not just when its in gear above 2700? or am i mistaken

mmm, yes and no. Im sure its valvetrain. Dont mind me, I was just suggesting a video so w can better assist you with diagnosis. Ya sawulkn, theres a how to if you search youtube for how to bleed lifters for an old dsm engine that helped me out. I didnt know what you were supposed to do with diesel though as they didnt use it in the how to. And just so you know, its a ***** to get the valvetrain back together. I had lifters falling out all over the place when i was reassembling and it took me a half hour just to get one side back on. There has got to be a way to hold those suckers in place when you dissassemble and reassemble.

do you happen to have picks of the valtrain appart i wanna try cleanin them but dont wanna go in blind so to speak haha

Hmm have you tried looking for an exhaust leak ?
Mine has one since i bought the header used and didnt notice a small crack it has until i put it on the car .
I know its not a ticking noise but it is very similar .
Also have you tried SeaFoam ?

the diesel fuel is used primarily to clean off dirt/grime and such...ill get my friend to scan the page in the handbook

And just so you know, its a ***** to get the valvetrain back together. I had lifters falling out all over the place when i was reassembling and it took me a half hour just to get one side back on. There has got to be a way to hold those suckers in place when you dissassemble and reassemble.

ok so this weekend i took appart the rocker assembly took out the lifters bled them and cleaned them and i reinstalled. i still have the noise and now on top of that i have a lifter tick what did i do wrong?

Maybe it could be your injectors making the clicking noise, I have had a similar clicking sound come from the injectors on my old eclipse and after I replaced / upgraded them to new fic 650cc injector the ticking went away, if you are running upgraded injectors make sure you tune them properly using a wideband...

Also another trick for cleaning is the inside of your motor is to add 1 quart of automatic transmission fluid (it has a high detergent level) to your motor right before chaning your oil... Add it, run your motor at idle for 5 minutes, then drain your oil , change your filter , and add fresh oil...

Another thing I like to do for cleaning up / lubing up your interior of your motor is to add 1 quart of Marvel Mystery oil to a full tank of gas right before you fill it up at the gas station. This lubes the inside of the fuel pump , the injectors and cleans the inside of your cylinders were the combustion happens...

Last but not least you can always try the seafoam , take off one of your vacume hoses and rlets the motor drink it straight into the intake, makes a huge white cloud but also burns off all the carbon build up on the inside of the motor...

thanks for the tips ive actually already tried all three of those and i have now determined it has nothing to do with my lifters.

the sound is a really mettallic rattle like if you take off a pcv valve and shake it it sounds almost exactly like it

I think we are definatly gonna need to hear it to help further diagnose this. The guy lancerman was referring to gave us all sorts of ways to explain the noise but wasnt until we heard for ourselves the noise we were able to really assist.
