Old News!! 4G64 Swapped Into A 2002 Lancer

ok, so I have done the swap since February of 2006. I have posted countless posts on this on SCLC and have decided to do the write up on it since NO ONE AT A2 DESIGNS has EVER gotten back to me when I told them that there are ways to getting around the "custom axles" and what not.

What you will need:

4G64 2.4L motor
(available in: Mitsubishi Galant, Eclipse RS/GS and Dodge Stratus ST/SXT)
F5M42 Tranny 5-speed.
ECU (for said engine/tranny)
4G64 MAS
Wiring harness- actually, therer is only 2 wires of a difference between the G64/G94.
1 Custom Motor mount
4G64 Transmission seals
1 4G64 Motor Mount (drivers' side)

Drain all fluids and begin diconnecting all hoses/lines and wiring harness.
Unbolt ALL motor mounts and remove engine and transmission like so:

Transmission
you will need YOUR (4G94) transmission GEARS and the transmission housing from the Eclipse/Galant/Stratus (4G64). SWAP OUT THE COMPLETE INTERNALS OF YOUR TRANSMISSION INTO THE F5M42 TRANNY!
*NOTE
this should be done by someone that knows their way around transmissions.

Now with that done, you can mount the transmission to the motor and still be able to use YOUR OWN AXLES!!! THERE IS NO NEED FOR "CUSTOM AXLES" THAT WILL COST YOU AN OVER PRICED AMOUNT! use that money to buy the bolt-ons I got (crower cam shaft, AEM Pulley, AEM Cam Gear, CAI, DC Race Header, Venom 400 PCM, etc, etc.)

one side note on the tranny swap...
A Master Slave Cylinder is needed for the Eclipse tranny because the one on the Lancer is INSIDE the bell housing where the Eclipse's is on the outside. Make a note of that and be sure that yours is in proper working order. (its just safer to buy a new one)

ENGINE

Now would be a perfect time to put on any bolt on parts that you might have for this motor (except for the intake). If you got the cam shaft this is THEE BEST time to do this. Open up your valve cover, take off the cam sprocket and the cover to the opening for the removal of the cam shaft. when completed it should look something like this:

the cam shaft at the bottom is the Crower Cam Shaft. It is a REGRIND of a stock G64 cam so if you need one, I can get you one.
The only motor mount that is needed is the Passenger side motor mount.

Once you have everything installed you are ready to put your new motor in. The 4G64 is slightly taller than the 4G94, so if you are sportin a CF hood, you MIGHT notice SOME fade on the clear coat after a while. It will depend on the quality of work done on the hood.
Also, depending on which header you go with, you will have to mount the passengers' side fan to the front of the radiator.

bolt all your mounts into place. Your front and rear motor mounts are the same, you will only need the driver's side motor mount (transmission) and one custom made for the passenger's side. The 4G64 has THREE (3) bolts and the 4G94 has TWO (2).

Once you are finished it should look ike this:

Total Cost:

2.4L engine- 450.00
Tranny- 450.00
AEM Pulley - 80.00
AEM Cam - 65.00
Venom 400 - 250.00
Labor - 000.00
ECU/Harness 90.00
Custom Motor Mount - 65.00
Crower Cam Shaft - 100.00
TOTAL
________________________

$1550

prices may vary if you decide to go to a shop and do this.
But labor shouldn't be more than $800.
so your total MIGHT be: $2350.
AND YOU WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO IMPROVE AND GO TURBO, MATE A 4G63 HEAD AND STROKE IT TO A 2.3L...etc, etc...
THE AFTERMARKET SUPPORT FOR THE G64 IS FAR BETTER THAN THE G94 AND IT'S A WAY BETTER PLATFORM TOO!!

I know you have questions and some flamers might jump out...so let me hear it.
To my knowledge, I am the first to complete this swap and can answer any question you might have. This is OVER a year old so this isn't anything new. I just got tired of people asking me when I was gonna do some type of write up on it.

ENJOY!

about a month and a half. The ONLY reason why is because NO ONE had ever done it so I had to do all the R&D on it. but now, knowing everything...it'll take about two - two and a half weeks tops!

ridiculous as in dumb or as in good?
cuz fyi...its STOCK on some 4G64 models. AND its of a better design because air is sent EVENLY into EACH valve which equals better combustion which equals better performance.

Hey, that is the same manifold I saw on Diavlos stock motor. I wnted to see if I could get one made for the Lancer cause it looked like it would work a lot better. Nice job on the swap. So is the 167hp just from the camshaft, header, exhaust, and manifold (if the manifold isn't stock)? Cause thats pretty good.

Yea dude!! That seems like it was a REALLY clean swap.

Whatwould be the difference between the 4G64 2.4L and the 4G69 2.4L?

Sorry if that's a noobish question

the 167hp AT THE WHEELS if with all the bolt ons that i listed. header, intake, cam, etc. the manifold is stock.
I know that if i tune it properly i can squeeze another 10-18 hp may be.

Sorry if that's a noobish question
the RA's motor (4G69) has MiVec and a throttle by wire system that wouldnt sit right with the non RA lancer.

This swap is the best "bang 4 the buck" IMHO.
and the after market support for the 4G64 is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than that for the G94.

start swappin them engines b4 junk yards know what we're doin and start chargin us what they charge the honda guys for their motors!!!
