5w20 vs 10w30?

Our car takes both 5w20 and 10w30.

Why might someone switch from regular (5w20) and go for 10w30? what benefits or drawbacks are there? i think im gonna try 10w30 in the summer but i dont know what to expect.

btw, anyone here reuse oil filters? i change my oil every 6000 km like the manual says. so i use fram synthetic filter which says is good for like 11400km and i use it for 2 oil change. i used to always use a brand new one with their cheaper filters

It makes sense to use a thicker oil only if you live somewhere where it's really hot. That's not the case with you.
Don't reuse oil filters. When the filter clogs it will open the bypas valve which is like having no filter at all and all of the impurities will not be filtered.
And one last thing, don't use Fram filters.

Stick with 5w20 or go with 5w30 if you want more choice when buying your oil. But I see no point in going with 10w30 in Ontario...

And as MasterAK said, don't reuse oil filters (they are so cheap anyways) and try to stay away from FRAM. Even though my dad always used FRAM filters on the old cars he's repairing (read 1960-1980 British cars) without problems, I heard to many stories so I'm trying to stay away from them...

OEM. They're made by Denso and very good quality. And if you want to change oil weights, change to 0W-20 or 0W-30. You don't really need 10w anything in Canada.

If you want to get picky about it, K&N Filters aren't very good at holding particulate. The filter is good, but once the pressure goes to 0 (i.e. when you turn the car off),all the crud it caught falls to the bottom of the filter and then gets sucked back into the engine when you turn on the car again. It's not something that's catastrophic, but it's also something that doesn't have to happen in the first place.

OEM, Amsoil, Mobil1, & Wix are 4 very good choices.

And you don't want to read anything about 60's - 80's British cars...it can be very depressing

I use PureOne Micronic Oil Filter with Mobil1 oil (5w20). $32 oil change ftw.

If you're in Toronto I'd just stick with 5w20, I use pennzoil synthetic with a mobil1 filter.
