Do I really need a sub?

I truly know ZERO about car audio. I hate the idea of adding a sub but i really need more base. When i go out on the weekends to the clubs i love listening to trance and techno but it just sounds like absolute **** on my stock 03 OZ speakers. I have a JVC KD-LH810 head unit. Are there speakers out there that can deliver enough bass to make the music sound good. I am not trying to turn heads on the street!

you could always get like an 8" sub. it'll add bass, but on't be too loud outside the car.

If youre coming from a club. You need something that hits hard. Get a JLw3v2.
You wont get anything from replacing the speakers alone.

I got to polk 10" 's, and they give me a nice tight bass. Can barely hear it out of the car, only when the windows are down. They are 570 max, but I have 270 going to each and it is great. Do not go with anything bigger than a ten for such a small car.

Yea, a nice 10'' sub would probably be fine for your case. All you would need is a 350watt mono amp, and a good quality sub. If you are looking for good quality bass, that is tight and responsive to techno, I'd suggest a Polk Momo sub. I have 2 12'' of them. They don't just slop and boom like most subs on the market, they actually have good bass response, and hit really low if the frequency is in the music. They look sweet too.. I always see them advertised in super street and at hot import nights too. But, its up to you. Go listen to subs at audio stores and make the decision for yourself. It all depends on your ears.

If you hate the idea of a sub, get some quality front and rear speakers, or even component speakers with the like 6" subs/tweeters to give you great all around sound a fairly decent bass.

If you don't wanna go through all that trouble, and still want killer bass from a small package, go to etronics.com and get an 8" Kicker Solo Baric L5 or L7 (4 ohm dual voice coil) and an MTX amp from sound domain. Also get an amp wiring kit and a friend to help build you a box and you are definitely set. I had this setup in an old civic and for how cheap it was, it blew me away with the sound and punch that it had from such a small woofer with little power. I only had it running at 250 watts and the amp I'm showing you runs 420W.

Also, you can buy a 4'x8' sheet of MDF for like 10 bucks and some screws and liquid nail and build a nice hatchback style box. I did this and it only took me one day to design, cut and put together a bullet proof box.

Here are the links to the sub and amp.

Or if you want a really nice clean looking install without a clunky box, have a fiberglass box/mold made (carpeted or painted) so it fits nice and snug in the corner. There is plenty of room in the lancer trunk in the two corners, that way it won't ruin any of your trunk space. IMO fiberglass boxes sound better for some reason.. it just makes it feel like the sub is part of the car and it has a solid sound to it opposed to a wood box.
To give you an idea, something like this.. but less flashy. (imagine a design similar to this, but sitting in the corner of the trunk, with just a carpeted floor.)

It just gives a nice clean little install, and it looks good at the same time. Its alot better than a box sliding around and putting 40lbs extra in the trunk.
A shop by me would so fiberglass work exactly like that for 1 sub for around 150 bux (carpet). If you supplied the paint, they would spray it and clearcoat it for another 35-40 bux.

What is the difference between my speakers and component speakers?

Stock speakers are decent, but they won't sound good at all compared to a nice set of component speakers. Component speakers have a so called "sub" underneath a tweeter, or another smaller speaker. So, out of one nice component speaker you will get a little to a medium amount of bass, and good high range too. Its like having a tweeter and really nice speaker all in one. They draw a lot of power, so you would probably need a 4ch amp. Plus if you get some nicer ones, they can be up to 200 dollars or more for a pair, and you need 2 pairs. My friend had a set of pioneers, I forget which model (they were yellow CF looking). His system was soooo loud you could barely stand it. Plus it was nearly distortion free. Thats the difference. Again, Polk Momo makes awesome speakers for components too, but they are expensive as hell.. my neighbor has his car's component speakers by polk momo, and it is the nicest, clearest sounding system I've heard in person. (even out of all the car shows I've been too)

Funny how people in the most materialistinc fuperficial place in the world always say, "I dont want to turn heads..." What is so bad about admiting you are human and want to be seen as cool so you can increase you chances of mating? music jis a good way to express your self hence why every car ad talks about the "300 watt 15 speaker sound system..."
