hrmm.. sounds similiar to what mine did.. white smoke after a minute or so on a cold start.. and also mine would also throw out plenty of smoke when i was on a long decel like on the highway or seomthing and off the throttle for a long time.. (alot of big hills around me)
it was from the turbo getting to much oil on startup, its from to much oil pressure, u might need to get a restrictor for your oil feed line if that is whats causing the smoke.. sounds like it to me.

from what i have read, a -3an line should also help stop that also.. im not really sure about a td04 turbo oil restricture, all ive seen is ones for t3's and ballbearings..

ya all i could find is just the normal oil restictors, nothing specific for a tdo4.. if u have a -4an line or a -3an line u would just need to find an inline restrictor with a .063 or so hole. should be good, u might just need an extra fitting to make it all hook up.. i have a male/female 1/8 npt restrictor with my -3an line attached to it. and it plugs right into the turbo.
this is the one i have. its pretty generic, u should be able to fit it to most turbos with the right fittings. might need an adapter for both sides. but you could make it work

I always thought:
white smoke = coolant
blue smoke = oil
black smoke = fuel (extremely rich)
I would check the oil to see if there was coolant in it. Just in case.

yes your right on the colors, but thats at normal temp range.. its pretty common on start up to have white smoke..his issues (As well as my old issue) is oil. why its white i donno.. but if u raise the revs it u can see the blue.. i think the color is white because of the exhaust not being up to tempature or something like that..
oil restrictor will fix all his issues.
(if he would of said white smoke at WOT, that would be completely different, but only on cold start up, its oil due to the oil pressure being so high, you need to reduce the volume of oil going to the turbo, its pushing so much in that it cant return it all fast enough, thus causing the smoke at cold idle)

white smokes can also indicate a bad head gasket
