255 on the stock rim + track time = bad. after going through a few tires due to chunking tread coming off i finally threw in the towel and decided it wasn't a good thing.

interesting, that's the first I've hear of it, I was thinking about going to a wider rim but I'm on the fence. I've got other projects I want to finish.

mine was not an isolated case either. a buddy of mine also was running 255 width tires on the stock rims (different brand of tire), same track and track day, also had the same problem with chunking.

Happen to have any pics? Could the chunking also have been due to alignment settings?
Cheers-

could be tire pressure related too I suppose. I'll give them a shot and if they suck it up I'll get something else later on.

I also havent heard of problems running the 255 on the stock wheel. I read many people say the 615s are the only 255 tire you should run on the stock rim though.
Mellon, just fyi next time you order. Vulcan tire has the cheapest prices on 615s. They are $126 a tire + shipping@~$44 = $548

thanks Turco, that's a good price, I heard I missed a special discout tire was running by a day or two... figures. I think I'm just about as excited about new tires as I am the 35R these tires are completely shot, wheelspin for days and it's gotten dangerous at any speed where there's deep water on the road.

Stop over driving the car?
The 255 615's work just fine on 17x8 and on track as long as you remember you are driving on a street tire.

Mellon, you should be excited about these tires I added them to my car this summer and have never looked back. They are awesome!

if i'm at the track i drive at the limit. thats why i go to the track i'm not going to take it easy cause im on street tires. if the tire can't handle it though, then either the setup is wrong or the tires suck. in this case normal sized tires on the same alignment have no problems (used two sets of advans that worked great for 10k miles each set). the 255's fell apart when mounted on stock rim.
both cars had alignments done prior to the events (i put the coilovers on the night before, 2 seperate events in my case, one for my buddy). my tires were khumo exsta MX, my friends if i remember correctly were bfg kdw2's.
i got 4 track days on the same set of tires. heres how hard i drive them:
http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y34...t=EVOvsZ06.flv
overall feel of the 255 khumos on the stock rim: very spongy, way to much slip angle, sidewalls were over the edge of the rim thats why they felt so imprecise compared to the advans. tire pressures had to be way high to keep from rolling over. wear was the normal wear on the inside of the tire, but the chunking came from the front right wheel, outside edge of tire. track was a counter clockwise direction for the events. hope that helps.

Wait, you where driving Khumos and your friend was driving a all season bfg?
Where did I say anything about khumos or bfgs?
The 615's in 255 work fine on 17x8 because their sidewalls are much stiffer than other 255 tires.
Not all 255 tires are created equal. Have you actually used the azenis 615 that we are discussing?
And over driving the car is over driving the car, even if you are mario andretti.

^^^ yeah that makes more sense why you were having problems. Like i previously stated and to razorlab's point, the 615s are the only 255 width tire people should use on the stock rims.

I installed my LC-1 + DB gauge this weekend to replace the stolen LM-1 setup I had. I was able to use the old WB02 sensor so now I have a new spare that came with the LC-1. The gauge works great and the wiring wasn't that bad. I bought it from my friend Lloyd at www.tunertools.com since he's a sponsor on my forum www.racevideoforums.com
I did some logging with EVOscan 2.0 this weekend, the gauges are a little buggy, they don't like to hold my decimal point and number of digits where I want them. However I did like the new IDC feature so I don't have to calculate it from IPW. I glanced over during a few high RPM pulls and saw a peak IDC of 91% on 93 octane @ 11.5:1 with the PTE 680's which confirms that I made the right choice since I was only going to run pump gas and meth eventually. I have the Aquamist kit assembled but not installed yet. I'll likely wait and see how much power I can make with the 35R kit on pump gas first. If it gets near the limits of the stock block I won't install it until I do the forged motor much later on.
I also had the Falken Azenis RT-615 mounted and balanced...omg these tires kick ass. I went around some corners at stupid speed and no sidewall rolling bs at all. I've never been excited about tires before this is a first. Turning is so crisp, traction is great, I hear them picking up rocks as I cruise through the neighbor hood like a drag radial, it's crazy. I went with the 255/40-17 instead of the stock 235/45-17, that should give me a wider contact patch on the stock rim.
Just got off the phone with Nick/Tim at Buschur Racing, the HTA 35R kit + tubular manifold + 4" to 3" coupler (35R inlet to BR stock MAS pipe) + PTE 780cc injectors shipped Friday. The Downpipe was finished this morning and will ship out today. I might have to take the DP to get a bung welded in, not sure if it has one or not.
It sounds like I'll have everything I need to get started by Friday so I can get it installed over the weekend.

Oh God!!!
Our General is really doing it to his horse...
I must abort reading this thread any longer or this soldier will have a burning wallet and a tent out on the snow covered grass...
