Hybrid Evo, what an idea

Personally, I dont even know if the next evo is gonna be as good if the following article is true and the idea materializes to implementation. But here it is anyway:

http://www.theage.com.au/drive/green...1022-h9lb.html

Maybe we'll get that low end torque we've always wanted!

Maybe there isn't going to be a drive shaft anymore, with the all wheels charging the batteries and only the rear wheels using the power.

Maybe it will just plain suck at whatever it's supposed to do.

Maybe the price will skyrocket to 50K.

Opinions welcome.

And how would that be...... if that were the case, I guess every hybrid sold would be lining Al Gore's pockets. Considering that Toyota, Ford, and Honda combined probably sell a combined half-million hybrids a year, Al Gore must be a freakin billionaire!

If that's where the future will take us, I'm sure that's where most car will go, and all we have to do is just wait.

Why not? It's certainly a great idea. I was really attracted to hybrids when the insight came out... even had the 07 Camry Hybrid. Traded it after a year though cuz it had a really boring drive, made me drowsy on long freeway trips (dangerous). During that time, I already started wishing that car makers would make an affordable sporty car w/ a hybrid drivetrain. A perfect combination of performance & fuel efficiency/economy.

A Evo hybrid would be the perfect car for me :-)

Dream specs:
* Main turbo 4banger gas engine driving front wheels only to save weight and moving parts, target 200HP/180tq so engine/components can be made much lighter/smaller (1.6L engine, smaller turbo, etc. for better fuel economy)
* One electric motor each per rear wheel (inwheel direct-drive technology, 75HP/90tq target per wheel)
S-AWC would be modified of course, but will have similar logic as the latest Evo, controlling both gas & electic drive systems (each wheel) at the same time to maintain the same cornering/handling performance as the X.

Total combined max HP = 350
Total combined max Torque = 360

YUMMM!

If the car doesnt continue down the evo 8/9 to x path of losing power, then its a good move. Should save some bucks. But I always though of hybrids more meaningful towards daily drivers. but then again i dont know much about the technology and the difference in performance, if any.

IF they do this, i really hope that they have trim levels like the Lexus line. Can you imagine what it would take to turn it in to a competition level car with the magnets and batteries PLUS the wiring?

mitsu has to do this. we prob wont see it in the US until the evo XII, and even then, it'll likely be an option and will have been available in other models beforehand.

Don't forget, mitsu made an ALL electric evo in 2004-2005. It's not like they're new to this. It'll have +10years of r&d before its sold in asia, let alone here.

An even better thing is that that heavy AYC component would be replaced by a software program that would increase the electric poser to the wheel that needs it as opposed to mechanically shifting the torque.

Call it "Virtual AYC"... and only applied to the rear wheels with the in-wheel electric motors. Retain mechanical LSD on the fronts :-) A much more sophisticated S-AWC, having both virtual & mechanical components.
