Event: Super Lap Battle Finale, Buttonwillow - November 11th, 2009

On November 11th, 2009, Ryan Gates competed for the first time in Super Lap Battle’s Limited Class with great success. Ryan won Limited class and also set a new class record in the process, the first Limited car to go under the 1:50 barrier with a 1:49.8.

With a long break since the last Redline Time Attack event in Pahrump, Ryan and the Gates311.com / AMS Performance / Nitto Tires Evo X headed back to Chicago and the AMS Performance HQ to run through the car. Nothing was upgraded on the car after the event, but a few maintenance items were changed and the car was refreshed a bit.

One of the first things to be changed were the front brake rotors along with new pads all around. The Girodisc rotors had taken an amazing amount of abuse, lasting over a year on a single set! With general wear on them, they were replaced with a fresh set and new pads. Special thanks to Girodisc for building such an incredible product.

Other minor fluids were changed, but Ryan was confident in the setup so the car was largely untouched, besides some new decals. K&N Filters helped the team out with some awesome new Air and Oil filters before the final events of the season. Their support was a key part to Ryan competing at the Super Lap Finale, and was extremely appreciated!

During Tuesday practice, Ryan drove the car very briefly to make sure the car was up to speed. Immediately the car was turning fast laps and running great. The fresh Girodisc rotors were performing great, as expected. During Tuesday practice, Leh Keen also took the car out to check out an Evo X for the first time. After a few laps, Leh was up to speed and having fun with the car on track. It’s quite a different car from Leh’s Grand Am Championship winning GT3 Cup, but he managed to still have fun. After the session, Leh, Bryan from JRZ and Ryan had a chat and went over the sessions from the day and made some minor changes to the suspension.

Wednesday’s timed practice provide group selection for the day, knowing being part of the fastest group was key Ryan posted a moderate lap of 1:51.1 to get things started for the event. With much left in the car, Ryan was happy with how things were shaping up.

In the first Time Attack session Ryan posted a surprising lap of 1:49.8, the first Limited class car to ever dip into the 1:4X.xx range. With that lap, Ryan was in the lead of the Limited class. Ryan was not happy with his lap, so a much more aggressive second Time Attack session was planned. Early in the second Time Attack session, Ryan was on a cool down lap and made a costly mistake by running over some curbing that destroyed his carbon fiber 3D front splitter. Other minor issues with the car were later found, but without a front splitter Ryan was unable to compete with the car in the current form. Ryan sat out the third and final Time Attack session of the event nervously, knowing there were plenty of capable cars at the event. Luckily, Ryan’s record breaking time stood and the Limited Class Championship was his. Ryan would like to congratulate Evasive Motorsports and Time Kuo on their amazing time, they also broke into the 1:4X.xx range for the first time, creating some awesome competition!

With less than three days until the Redline Time Attack Finale at Autoclub Speedway, Ryan and the AMS Team worked out a a few of the minor issues on the car but getting another front splitter was not in the cards. Ryan was looking forward to the challenge, but knew it was going to be very tough to compete at such a high speed track.

Event: Redline Time Attack! Finale, Auto Club Speedway - November 15th, 2009

On November 15th, 2009, Ryan Gates continued his success with Redline Time Attack by winning Modified Class at the Season Finale at Auto Club Speedway. In the process, Ryan also set the new Modified AWD track record with a 1:43.4.

With Super Lap Battle less than three days in the past, not much could be done to repair the splitter that Ryan had destroyed at Buttonwillow. Knowing that, some other issues became the main focus before the Redline Season Finale at ACS. Besides the splitter, the main issue was a fuel delivery problem the car was having which was causing the car to run very lean, in excess of 14:1 Air/Fuel ratios under full throttle. Ryan sourced new fuel pumps but unfortunately they weren’t the correct ones. With time running out, the car was left untouched from SLB and arrived late Friday night to the garages within the ACS facility.

Minor touch ups to the front bumper were needed for reinforcement without the splitter, due to the high speeds that ACS offers. The car was cleaned and ready for practice on the following morning. Ryan headed out in the first AM practice to get the track dialed and get the chassis setup sorted with the newfound lack of front downforce. Unfortunately, the car heavily understeered and there was plenty of work to be done.

Luckily, Bryan from JRZ was once again on hand and doing all he could to get the chassis sorted throughout the day. Eventually, the car was moving in the right direction and Ryan was feeling better about the setup. But there was one other main issue, the car was running extremely lean. Alfred from Tuning Technologies was at the track and tried to help with the car, not much could be done to the ECU tune to help, so Alfred resorted to turning the boost down to well below 20psi, normal is 31psi. Even then, the car was still lean but Ryan pressed on and finished out the day.

Sunday’s plan was to take it easy in the first session, then turn the car all the way back up in hopes it would last thru the extremely lean condition’s for a single lap. Unfortunately, as Ryan was heading out to the first T/A session, a large crack was noticed in the turbine housing. Ryan missed the first T/A session. With help from Ivan @ AMS, a new turbo was swapped into place in time for the second T/A session.

Heading out for the second T/A session, Ryan planned to take a safe first lap to get a time in the books and press much harder on the third lap. To prevent any damage during the safe lap, Ryan drove the car at 3/4 throttle to keep AFR’s in a safe zone and posted an amazing 1:43.4 laptime, fastest of the day in Modified class and a class track record! With the second lap used for cool down of the Nitto tires, Ryan pushed hard onto the front straight to begin the third and final lap. AFR’s were still high, running mid 14’s down the straight. Luckily, or in Ryan’s mind unfortunately, a few bolts fell off the turbine housing while entering the banking causing all boost to be lost and a chance at a very fast lap not possible.

Even with all of the issues, Ryan and the AMS Team, with the help of Bryan from JRZ and Alfred at Tuning Technologies, made it thru the finale weekend with another win to complete a perfect season for Ryan. Winning each race he entered, setting records at each track and pushing through any issue, Ryan made 2009 a very memorable season. With the Modified AWD Championship from Redline and the Limited Class Championship from Super Lap Battle, Ryan couldn’t be happier on how 2009 panned out for him and his sponsors. Without all of the huge support from his sponsors in 2009, Ryan and his perfect season would not have been possible.

Ryan Gates would like to thank each his sponsors for their incredible support in 2009:

Wow! What can I say? It was a great experience participating in the 2009 Redline Time Attack series. From driving my registered daily driven 2006 Evolution IX to work and home, up and down the state of California and Nevada to participate in the events and to drive it back home after the event is a task within its self. But to do it fully loaded with an extra set of wheels and tires, tools and equipment and to succeed at every event is beyond my doubt astonishing. And the people you meet at the track are a class act alone and will be friends for a long time to come.

On the racing side, I really did not realize what I had in me. The tracks I drove on brought the raw talent out of me, as most of the courses were green to me. Throughout the course of the day I was able to go faster and faster as I pushed the boundaries within myself further and further. With doing so I completed the four RTA-West series races with four podium finishes. Three of those being 1st place finishes and the other a 3rd. With those total points acquired I clinched the 2009 Redline Time Attack – West – Stock-AWD Championship.

I cannot give enough thanks to my sponsors for being there for me and having the same faith and comment as me. Just as I said before, “with your support and my dedication, I believe we will have many wins throughout the season”, which it has.

-         Mishimoto

-         Prosport Gauges

With all said and done for this year. Let’s make the next even better…!

Thanks,

---------------------------------

The weekend...

The final Round 8 of the Redline Time Attack series took place at beautiful Auto Club Speedway (formally Cal Speedway) located in Fontana, CA. The weather was perfect resulting in excellent temperatures for our cars to run at optimal levels. The "Roval" set-up consist of 2/3 of the NASCAR oval with an infield road course added to the mix. It is a high speed track with my car reaching 160mph and other well prepped cars easily exceeding that mark going into the bank of turn 1.

Saturday was the test-n-tune/HPDE day and I was already breaking the covenant 2 minute mark and still trying to figure out the fastest line of the course. With each practice session I was extracting more and more time and only needed to adjust my tire pressure before the main event on Sunday.

With not much sleep due to a ailing sickness I acquired on Thursday, and a combination of race day butterflies, I was up and ready for what the ever the day may unfold. Practice went great and I felt my car was really dialed in for the time attack session. With my timed practice session I was gridded 6th amongst the fastest street/stock class cars. Not bad considering some of the street class competitors are well budgeted shops with all the amenities of a true team with full sponsorships. With all budgets set aside it was time to get to business and show everyone what a true grassroots, privateer, daily driven car can achieve with the right limited modifications.

The first time attack session was on. A brief intro to a time attack session is a 5 lap total race against the clock with a 8-10 second gap between the car in front and rear of you. Optimizing the chance of running a fast lap with zero to little interactions with other cars on the track. The first lap being a warm-up lap is then followed by 3 hot laps and then completed with a cool down lap.

During my time attack session everything felt great. Power delivery was excellent, suspension felt phenomenal and the temps kept the car happy. After the the warm up lap the green flag was waved and I was off. The 1st and 2nd lap felt great but I truly felt that the 3rd lap was going to be even better. After coming off the oval and going through turns 3-6 I gassed it all of a sudden felt no power! I immediately checked all my gauges and nothing was out of the ordinary except that I wasn't making any boost. I limped my car in as it could drive normal under boost. After further inspection it had seemed that my turbo seized and lift me powerless and done for the remainder of the day.

With me left powerless and unable to compete I only hoped that I ran a good enough time to at least place on the podium. The second session was conducted and I could only watch the excitement instead of being a part of it. The times are not posted to keep the suspense a live and would have to wait for the awards presentation to see where I placed.

The awards were handed out and come to find out I ran a 1.53.241 during the first timed session putting me on the top of the podium, and taking 1st place in the Stock-AWD class. I only edged out 2nd place by 6/10 tenths of a second, who managed to ran a quick 1.53.884. After all of the Rd.8 awards were awarded it was time to announce the 2009 Champions. Out of the four Redline Time Attack - West events I participated in, I placed 4-for-4 in podium finishes. 3 of the 4 being 1st place finishes. With those results I was awarded the 2009 Redline Time Attack - West - Stock-AWD Championship!

The turn out was OK, but not as many people as I thought. The tuners did an amazing job getting ready and putting a serious effort into the race, but the "fan" support of racing seemed weak for Southern California and especially at a track that is so close. Any thoughts on why T/A is not marketed more or attended more?

Driven by Tim Kuo a.k.a. StinkyTofu, Evasive placed 2nd in the Limited AWD class with 1:49.9. Unfortunately, we had some minor issues with the car
but hope to come back stronger next season. Some changes with the car have already started being discussed. Overall, we definitely can’t complain and are very happy with the results. Congratulations to Ryan Gates of Gates311.com / AMS for taking 1st place.

Much thanks to Voltex, Tein, HKS, Rays Engineering, Yokohama for your support with our team. Thanks to Super Lap Battle’s Elliot Moran, Super Street’s Jonathan Wong and Sean Klingelhoefer.

2009 Race season ends: Accounts from a Rookie Racer

My 2009 race season as a rookie racer is over. It has been an amazing year. I don’t know how I can articulate how amazing it has been to start racing this year. So much has happened from the end of the 2008 season to now. I went from competing in NASA’s Time Trial series, to racing in Super Touring. I’m an example of NASA’s ladder system. I didn’t start in HPDE 1 with NASA, but either way I made my way up the ladder system from HPDE, to time trialing, and now racing. Typing about this now is probably the first time I’ve sat down to think about it all.

The transition into racing, besides all the thrills, has been stressful. Compared to what I go through now, it used to be a walk in the park when I used to get ready for time trial events. Now, the development and preparation is endless. We usually have about 1 month between our regional races, but that 1 month never seems to be enough. The days seem like hours, and the weeks seem like days. I just never feel like I have enough time to rest and get ready.

Having started racing this year has been a great journey. There have been several major unexpected highs, and a ton of challenges stacked with more challenges. I’ve learned a great deal about myself, my friends, my sponsors, and about racecraft. On top of all that, I finished all 6 of my regional races without any incidents. I successfully completed my provisional racing license, and before leaving for Nationals I received my official racing license. Also, on top of being the 1st from Socal racing an Evo in Super Touring, I’m also the 1st to race an Evo at MMP for NASA’s National Championship. Here is everything I accomplished this year:

Details: 2009 Results

* Total of 8 Super Touring ST2 races
* 2 Super Touring ST2 National Championship races
* 6 Super Touring ST2 Socal Regional races
* 6 podiums in a row
* 4 wins in a row
* (2) 2nd place
* Winner of hard-charger award
* (1) Pole position
* All the while as a rookie racer

I had a very successful year of racing this year (which was totally unexpected), but I know that it’s only going to get more challenging from here on out. I have learned that racing, compared to HPDE and Time Trialing, is on a completely different level. I knew that prior to starting racing this year, but I now have that experience. Racing, in one sense, is a major battle of attrition. Parts are going to wear out more quickly, there is going to be contact, and there is nothing you can do but hang on and try to deal with everything accordingly. And the only reason why I was able to hang on so that I could persevere through the challenges and achieve those accomplishments was because of my sponsors and friends. Thank you to all of you for your support:

- RRE
- Robispec
- Girodisc
- SCM
- ACT
- Island Tire
- Last, and definitely not least, my crew, my friends, Robert Ramirez (a.k.a. Honda Robert), Sean Bradley, and Mark Homer.

As for the 2009 Socal NASA Championship, I don’t know what place I took overall because the final season points have not been assessed yet. When that happens I will note it accordingly. I know I didn’t win it because I missed too many races. But for what it’s worth, I was in 1st place after my first 6 races with a total of 580 points. The 2nd place driver was very close behind me with 565 points. Unfortunately, after getting hit at Nationals, I was not able to repair my car to participate in our last 4 races (Oct/Nov). That incident cost me a podium finish for the season. Even though I didn’t have enough points to win the Socal Championship, if I had been able to race in October and November I would have had a chance at a podium, and possibly 2nd place overall. But that’s racing. The 2009 season is over, but the 2010 season is right around the corner. In less than 3 months we are back at Big Willow to start the 2010 race season. I must say that it all went by really fast.

It would most likely be on the North Track Circuit, but could be on the South if everyone prefers. Here is a link to the track:

http://www.autobahncountryclub.net/r...ack_rental.htm

Track time would be from 12 pm to 4 pm. Track will be fully staffed like a normal test day. Weather is supposed to be good both days. I am looking for 5-6 people to sign up. Cost will be 500-600 per person depending on # people who sign up (could be as low as $360 with 9 people). This is a great chance to get track time without a lot of other cars on the track (10 cars max). PM me if interested and I will give you my contact info to work out the exact details.

Payment would be made directly to the track to hold your spot.

I would like to let everyone know that the Philly region is planning to host a trial event at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA on November 22, 2009. This is a non-points event as it is a trial event to show Comcast Spectacor what a Solo event is and how the Philly region runs their program. The hope is that Comcast Spectacor will be impressed with our showing and allow us to utilize the site for the 2010 season and beyond.

This would be a great end of the year test and tune to try some new things to mull over the winter in order to get a jump start on the 2010 season.

The event hinges on the interest of our competitors as we do not want to hold an event with less than 100 competitors in attendance given that this is late in the year and close to Thanksgiving we wanted to make sure there was enough interest in this event.

Please check out the post on the Philly forum - Philly SCCA post - for more info. Hope to see you at the event!!

Those of you who've been on the boards for a couple years may have seen the buildup on my hillclimb Evo. The goal was pretty simple - build an Evo that would be good & safe for rallying and go have fun playing in the dirt. My wife and I were pleased with how we did in 2008, setting records at our last 3 events which included the Time Attack AWD record at Pikes Peak. :D We also managed to take home the Colorado Hill Climb Assn. Rally AWD championship. We weren't able to get out to any rally events though, but trying to build a new car always results in budget over-runs. :crap:

2009 saw a ton of changes to the car. With all the new-found power, we ran into growing pains during the year, but still managed a respectible season, taking 2nd place at PPIHC (after a blown IC pipe sapped 300hp at the startline), and won the Rally AWD in the Colorado Hill Climb Assn. series. We made it a bit closer to entering a true stage rally, volunteering as a "0" car at Rally Colorado. This got the Evo out on a few of the stages, but no chance to take them at any real speed. :( Basically, we're finding the budget it takes to stage rally is still out of reach. Note to self...win the lottery. :lol:

So, this brings me to planning for 2010. As PPIHC continues to add a mile of pavement every year, the need for developing our car into a tarmac terror increases. I'm thinking about entering some time trials events, along with a healty dose of track days. The car's got a bunch of goodies that normal rally cars don't have, but its a far cry from a good track car in the handling department (onl have include an adjsutable rear sway bar and 17x9.5" wheels).

I've been reading the Redline TA rule book tonight and I've got a question that I'm hoping some of the regulars might be able to shed some light on. There's no way my car would ever be competitive in Unlimited class, so I'm thinking about trying to get it back to being legal in the Modified class. I see there's a rule that requires an "interior" but looking at pictures of cars that compete in that class shows quite a bit of variation on what "interior" means.

Thanks!

Dave
