Changed oil for first time - questions

Well it all went fairly smoothly. I've done work on cars before, but changing the oil on each car seems to have its own "unique experience." Jacking this car up is definitely a little tricker than others I've had.

Couple questions:

1.) I neglected to read the service manual and note starting the car and letting it warm to 176-194 degrees prior to changing the oil. Is this a big deal for this one time? I imagine not so I am proceeding as I already drained from the pan. I am guessing I won't get all the residual oil out due to this? So maybe I change the oil again short of the 3000 miles next time.

2.) Has anyone found a cheaper place to get the drain plug washers? I was thinking Copper State Nut and Bolt here in AZ would probably have them so I need to check. Mitsubishi charges way to much for these things.

3.) Anyone see the need to install a magnetic drain plug? I've run them before and it always seemed like a good idea.

Hey, I hope you are enjoying your new Evo.

1) I'm sure you'll be fine. A little more warm fluid will get everything out as you suggested. I drained mine cold once, and the factory fill recommendation overfilled it by almost 1/4 quart. YMMV, I'd fill it all but half quart, start, check. Add as needed.

2) I've always used Mitsu, but if there is a source in bulk, please share.

3) I think its overkill for the engine, but whatever floats your boat. The transmission one is magnetic from the factory, because there is a lot of shavings in there.

2.) I'll let you know tomorrow - running to Copper State Nut and Bolt then.

magnetic bolt for oil pan is overkill - i almost never get anything adhere to the bolt, other than it being a pain to put back in because it likes to adhere to the pan instead of the drain hole. it's more trouble than it's worth.

as for the crush washer, you can get cheap ones at autozone/pep boys/kragens. as long as you get the right size, they're fairly cheap to come by. i opted to change it into a hard reusable washer. no leaks, and a better peace of mind keeping it.
