Drives: 99 Cobra

Buying an Evo next month

I'm buying an Evo 8 next month. I currently drive a 1999 svt cobra with 380 to the crank but I am selling it. I understand the concept of tuning and ECU flash and have an innovate lc-1 I'll be putting in the evo. Where would be a good place to study or a book I can read; so when it comes time I will already have some basic tuning knowledge?

My 99' cobra with built IRS already takes turns like crazy so I can only imagine the fun I will have in this car! I know I know... With time.

Here's my goals.

11 or 12 second quarters with a massive amount of top end.

I want to stay stock turbo with bpv, drop in filter, turbo back exhaust, and manifold. I already have my Cobra tuned for 93 octane so that isn't an issue. I do want the car to be reliable, tho. Everything else will be cosmetic or suspension.

Even though you are new, you aren't restricted to the other sections.

I guess it depends on what you consider Massive Top End.

Your ET goals are definately do able with the stock turbo and good driving. Top End is determine by HP which basically is the amount air going through the motor. In general Bigger Turbo/Displacement/Cams/and better flowing heads generally give better top end power. If your sticking with the stock turbo it will become the limiting point of your top end acceleration.

I did some digging and there is a ton of info on these cars! I'm impressed and happy that I'll own one soon. Does anyone have a favorite on suspension components?

I've been doing quite a bit of research but I still had a few questions. What are the evos strong and weak points? Should I get an evo 8 or 9 on a $17,000 spending budget ? (9 has vvt but still wondering) Where can I find something similiar to FLSFC (full length subframe connectors)? I know the JDM spec evos are a bit faster, is there a way to get the jdm tune from a rom or is it an entire ecu? Other than that I'm having a blast learning about these cars. I plan on getting hids and stiffer shocks and springs because of the soft spring rates. Oh , how many sets of tires do you guys go through?

P.S. Technical information, brochures, and articles are greatly appreciated.

The 9 has mivec which is a good reason to go for a 9. They have a larger hotside and the turbo can make more power than an 8 which has a smaller hotside.

The 9 also has acd, which some peeps really like.

I have an 8, the only regret about it is the open front diff. I spent about 1k on a LSD in the front when i did my clutch.

Every car is different, so you have to tune each car, you can start with a base, but custom tune is the way to go.

The stock suspension is pretty good and I haven't changed it. I don't track the car yet...
Best purchase for my car was a service manual. Ebay has them for pretty cheap.

I love my car, it is fun to drive.

Good luck with your ride!

I would look for an 8 with $17K budget. Their are few 9's that have sold for ~$19k, but many are still in the low 20's.

Yah but for $17,000 the evo 8 imo is still a heck of a deal. I actually prefer the evo viii Uk badging :-p. I'm sure there's nothing the car lacks that can't be fixed with time and money... But that LSD and MR diverter will be some of my first mods.

(edit) I want enough top end to keep up with 99-04 cobras. ?
