Same size wheel, different offsets effect

Can someone explain to me why would the same size wheel with different offsets front to back cause harm to the AWD system?

Exp. Front 18x8.5 +38
Rear 18x8.5 +12

I'd like to have an understanding of how things work rather than just be told NO. Can't tell me not to push the red button, unless you say why!

Different offsets are fine... Different width isn't because you affect the tire diameter with wheel size and diameter. AWD system requires the same diameter of tire front and back, left and right, meaning you need to use the same size tire and the same width wheels.

Offset is just like using a spacer, nothing else.

No harm to AWD. I'd recommend to run smaller offset in front.

What does width have to do with diameter? Diameter is the circumference of the tire itself, not the width.

Wider wheel with the same width tire will slightly change the diameter.

BTW, wider track width on an AWD car in the back will likley cause understeer.....that is if you care about peformance. some only care about looks.

Mixxing them is a bad idea since then your tire rotations would requrie you to dismount and remount/balance each tire every time. You are just better off keeping them the same front and rear for that reason alone, the advantage of running slightly lower camber (wider track) up front isn't worth that pain in the backside when it comes to tire rotation.

I never mentioned different size tires or different size wheels. Everything would be the same except the offset

Front 18x8.5 +38
Rear 18x8.5 +12
Tire 245/40/18

^^^This is just an example, not an exact or even a down the road setup up. I just wanted to understand if it would cause harm but everyone keeps mention different size wheels and tires

It made perfect sense the way "Toxin" described it to me.

Thanks everyone for the responses

I think you understood it correctly. What you want is fine while for example:
245/40/18 on a 18x8.5 front
245/40/18 on a 18x9 rear
is NOT ok.

I was answering the question of the other poster.

The offset greater in the back will still cause the car to understeer. Not worth it just for looks...not to mention the fronts will look completely sunken in and the rears will stick out near the edge of the fender.

Many, if not most JDM track cars use smaller offset in the front to widen the track to
counter understeer.
Definitely a common method to "increase" overall grip for the corners.

I did not write that clearly....I always think of this in reverse. Wider track in front and smaller in back=more grip and less understeer. THe OP wants to have same size wheels +12 in back and +38 in front....should result in understeer.
