rim fitment confusion!!

ok, so i go to a local store and ask for some recommendations on 18" rims for the winter. they're going on 245/40/18 tires hankook icebears. they recommend some replica volk RE30 w/ +45 offset.

i read that wheel fitment chart thread that's stickied at the top of this forum and it recommends offsets under +30.

then i find pics of other people running real RE30s and the largest offest is +28.

i'm confused here, the larger the offset the more it sticks out right? would a +45 stick out more that the actual tire?

Hey Vassili

The lower the offset, the more the wheel sticks out. The stock evo x offset is +38 I believe. Not too sure u wanna go with a +45. The highest I would go is the stock offset.

I'm currently running a +22 for my advan RZ's. These are my summer rims tho.

It seems like you read the info but misinterpreted its meaning. The info below applies to positive offset

- The lower the offset, the closer the mounting surface of wheel is to the center of the wheel
- For any given wheel with the same width, the lower the offset, the more the wheel sticks out. This is because the mounting surface of the wheel is closer to the center, hence there is a larger proportion of the wheel beyond where the hub is.
- Not sure what you mean by your last statement. What would stick out more than the actual tire? the wheel? Tires are mounted on wheels which is mounted to your car (their location is fixed relative to each other), so offset would not have anything to do with it.

What size wheels did they recommend you? You don't want +45 offset, since it might not clear your brake calipers.

This is VERY important. Some 18" wheels even with a +25 offset won't fit over the stock evo x front calipers. It all depends on the rim design. Many rims with deep lips can be a problem if the spokes are recessed in a lot. Your best bet would be to get a wheel that you've confirmed someone else has put on a X, or make sure there is no cost to you if they order the wheels and they do not fit properly over the brakes.

cool, thanks guys, i'm going to have a talk with the rim guy. i'm going to tell him that stock offset is +38 so anything between that and +28 should be ok. also ask him about me not getting screwed if they don't fit.

I would really not go for anything over +30 if I'm buying aftermarket rims. The fitment is not as aggressive and it won't look so good.

Curious how much they are quoting you for your wheels. You might as well get Rotas have excellent Evo X fitment if you have to pay around $1k for a set.
