Winter Tires

Hi guys,

Well that time of season is coming along... *WINTER* Yah

A couple questions;

Do you guys ever use your stock rims for the winter? I have the EvoX MR (BBS) That's probably RIM scratch heaven.

Can you even get 18" steeles?

Any recommendations on where to purchase? I live in Ontario, Canada.

My last couple cars it was pretty easy, get some basic winter tires on steels, DONE.

Come on, you know you want a set of Volks come Spring. Use those stockers as your cheap rims.

That's what I'm doing, anyway. You can jump on tirerack.com to get an idea of rims that are available. $150/rim is about as inexpensive as they get.

I've always gotten by fine with just all seasons on my AWD cars. This will be the first car that I've put snows on. I live in the Minneapolis area where the snow never really gets deep.

I'm in the same boat as you.. I live in Michigan.

The best thing to do is just use the stock rims for winter tires. For summer, get a set of nice rims and tires. That way, all you have to do is just swap them out when the season changes and you don't have to worry about re-mounting/re-balancing the tires on the original rims.

For winter tires, I'm going with 235/40/18 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D's. They're rated highly in a lot of winter driving tests, and I know plenty of other Evo drivers recommend them.

As summer approaches, I'm going to pick up a set of nicer 18x8.5 rims and throw the stock Yokahama Advan tires on there until they wear out the rest of the way. I like the size of the stock rim, so I'm not going any bigger.. plus I'll save cost since it seems to go up exponentially as the size goes up.

I have driven on the Dunlops and I personally did not like them at all.

You can never go wrong with a Blizzak.

Ya I just don't want to buy new rim/tires in the summer time... Man tough decisions.

I usually recommend thinking about these things before buying a car.
