See this article here:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=46
The middle number is the aspect of the tire. It determines how tall the sidewall is. With a 50 aspect, your speedo will be off due to the tire being larger and you will possibly get rubbing. It's not recommended. Where are you situated?

^Most of the 225/45-18 tires show a rim range of 7-8.5" wide so they should fit just fine on the stock 8.5" rims. They're pretty close to the overall diameter of the stock tires also.

is there anymore feedback on this because I need to buy winter tires asap. i live in chicago and the winters here are not the best.
i was looking to find a set of 17 inch rims that fit but havent been able to find them, but i have been told it may be possible if you get the right offset.
does anyone have any feedback on 17's? if not will a 235/50/18 work. there are alot of big potholes here in the winter and would like a bigger sidewall. not to concerned with speedo being off to much.
would the 235/50/18 make the speedo to high or lower then the actual speed?

the 235-50 will be 20 mm higher or 13/16"
I am not sure we have the room for that but I also like higher sidewall.
as far as speedo you will have 3% difference
you will read 50mph while the speedo will indicate 50

latest test on winter tire show the Xice Xi2 beeing the best.
I had Xice before and they were outstanding.
I feel that they were getting less grip the third winter even they had only 5000 miles and plenty of thread left.
did the syntethic rubber suffer the heat storage during summer month?????
I will say in summer in my shed temperature can be 120F. did this affect the grip?
or was it just an impression?

235/50R18 will not work.
245/45R18 will work, but will bump and rub over uneven ground and on turns.
225/45R18 will work ok.

I ordered the michelin 225/45R18 but the rim recommendation is 6.5" to 8"
the stock rim are 8.5" but I think it should work as the tire width should be 9"

karl most 17" will fit, but is not recommended because there is very little caliper clearance.
225's can stretch on the 8.5 fine, but that's not recommended on paper.

would you suggest a 17 with some clearance or just a 225 tire on stock rims
