My $5 temporary splash guard solution.

Like everyone here my car is getting rock chips on the rear rocker panel/door and I have OEM splash gaurds on order but it looks like it is going to be mid april before they get here. So I came up with a temporary solution to limit or totaly prevent the rock chips until mine show up. All you have to do is go to your local Advanced Auto and buy the $5 genaric, flat, black, universal splash gaurds for cars. In the inner fender well of the front wheels you will see 3 push snaps that you can remove to install the flaps there. Drill the flaps to line up with the holes from where the push pins were and re-install the push pins(I added the longer screw in type pins for added security) to secure the flap to the inner fender well. Also you will need to cut the inside of the flap off to allow clearance for the tire. I also put in one screw to secure it. This will provide the extra coverage around the tire to keep the rocks from flying up and hitting your car. Total time for the install took me about 30 minutes. Let me know what yall think. I dont think it looks too bad. Here are some pics

Good idea and certainly worth $5.00 if it keeps the paint from getting all nicked up.

can you snap a few more pictures, maybe a bit further away from the car to see how it looks 'overall', with the entire car in the picture?

This is the only other picture I have right now. They only stick out about a inch at the most and you car hardly see them.

smart move to help keep your car in good shape. I did the same thing with my 8 when i bought it. 8 dollar mudflaps from autozone.

Looks great, actually. I was expecting a bit of a hack job, but that turned out much better than I expected.

I have been looking at RusselM's OEM guards, but didn't want to jump on them until I heard someone's experience (once they get in). I still don't even know if they include the front wheel guards!

I'll be following your example in the meantime. How insecure was it without the screw? I would rather not, if possible...

Thanks for the tips.

It did not really need the screw, but I thought since I was a test mule I would put it in to make sure none of the push pins popped out.

+1 Looks very OE like. I think the OEM mitsu ones may only be the rears. From the picture, it shows the rear only. I might do this mod this weekend also.

BTW, I got the 3M scotchguard full kit on my car yesterday. I got the 1/2 hood coverage (covers almost half the hood), front fenders tips, front bumper, lugage area, mirrors, and rocker panels. The price was very high for it all ($790 installed) The front bumper is a real *****, but they did an awesome job. The rocker panel kit by itself you cant even see it AT ALL. The price for just the rocker panel kit installed is $195. The 3M product has a 5 year nationwide warrantly also. I would highly suggest at minimum the rocker panel kit. Invisible protection, and no more chipping of the paint there.
