Changing oil on rear diff
anyone tried to change the oil on the rear diff yet? this is my first attempt at it, and since the last time i loosened a wrong bolt by mistake, i was hoping someone would give me some basic instructions, if there aren't any detailed photos. things like tools needed, how much oil i need, would be great. any help is appreciated, thanks

I did this it was a pain in the ass. I need to get a fluid pump.
I believe it only takes 0.9 Qts.
I THINK someone posted up the pictures from the service manual, I will try and find the pics.
The tool you will need is 3/8 hex allen driver. And the fill plug is right above the drain. Using a 17mm wrench.

I just did transfer case and rear diff about two weeks ago in my friend's shop. It's very easy to do both of these, especially when using a lift . Anyway just make sure you have a pump or you'll really have a hard time doing this.

I used this to change mine.
Here is a how to for anyone interested. Yes it works fine and you do not a need a expensive fluid pump.

i think when it comes to this particular car, the more sensible question would be "why not?" i did the transmission and the t case fluids, and i didn't like what i saw. probably will be the same story with the rear diff fluid. and filling those hard-working parts with proper heavy duty fluids will sure to make it last.

No one seems to have mentioned this, so I will. The rear diff has two fluids. One part uses LSD gear oil, the other uses Diamond ATF SP3. The fill/drain bolts have labels next to them (engraved onto the rear diff) that say "Gear Oil" and "ATF SP3". For some reason, the gear oil has two fill bolts, but you're only supposed to remove one of them. Look in the service manual or in the useful threads in the mitsubishiparts.net forums for a link to the thread that shows how to service the rear diff.
Also, you need a 10 mm hex to remove the drain bolts. Some auto shops label the tool as a disc caliper hex tool too - just make sure it's 10 mm.
