Custom intake install w/ pics
Yesterday I dug around the garage and found a bunch of parts and thought "Hmm, I'm broke. Why not make my own custom intake until I can get a 'real' one?". Below is a walkthrough with pics of the install:
Step 1: Separating the MAF pipe from the Air box. This proved to be quite a challenge, as the metal retainers where stripped. I ended up spinning the bolts with a drill while pulling on the MAF pipe.
Step 2: Getting the bolts off the MAF pipe. I used vise grips to hold the little golden "nuts"
Step 3: K&N cone filter mounted to MAF pipe. Just used a hose clamp to get it nice and tight.
Step 4: I had the filter on and noticed that it was resting on the bracket for the stock airbox and just sort of flopped around. So I decided to fabricate a custom mount for the filter. Here I am drilling into a bracket for a wiring harness
Step 5: Custom mount installed. I did not have a nut, so I used the pseudo "nut" from the airbox with a locking washer. I also used a spacer so that I would be able to put the wiring harness back onto its bracket afterwards
Step 6: The finished setup. I just used one of the MAF pipe bolts to bolt the MAF pipe to my custom aluminum bracket

Sweet. Now you can suck up all kinds of hot air from the engine bay. Good job.

thanks guys. This is nothing permanent. Also, I find myself strangely willing to deal with the engine sucking in hot air for a while in exchange for the sound of the turbo spooling and the BOV.

Good job saving a few hundred dollars for the same result. These $300-$400 short ram intakes for sale are a joke. All the sudden it seems that companies think Evo owners are rich, and will pay anything for their products. These are bent aluminum pipes with a filter stuck on the end. Come on...! These shouldn't me more than $150.( which will be the true value in the Private Sale section).
Same for exhausts. I see DUAL exhaust systems for other cars for less than most of what is offered for the X.
Please excuse the rant
What is the opening size of the filter that you used?

No problem with the rant, I feel the same way. As far as the filter opening goes, I have no idea, I just had it laying around the garage (my brother in law flooded my garage with spare parts). It's slightly bigger (1/4" maybe) than the lip on the MAF pipe. The hose clamp did a great job sealing it though.

I am not too sure about this...You really are sucking up a LOTTT of hot air, and I wouldn't want hot air going through an intake...and applies to other intakes aswell which do not have a heat sheild, whether HKS or not, you need a heat sheild, better yet an air box. I find the stock air box pretty decent rather than spending $1000 on an intake+air box (GruppeM/HKS etc)

While you're at it, make it a CAI instead. I bet your bro in law has some tubing laying around.
