I had no problem just unscrewing mine off, but I've heard others saying their plastic insert came loose from inside the shift knob...causing their shift knobs to come off on them when shifting.
If you are attempting to unscrew yours off and it's not doing anything, try just pulling the knob off.

i have the aluminum shift knob as well. It screws right now. Use something rubbery to grip on the knob and twist the heck out of it. it will come off. oh eayh, righty tighty...lefty loosey!

What are you replacing them with? Does anybody know of a place who sells knobs for the X?

^ You don't need a X-specific shift knob, just find one with the same pattern. I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone will chime in with that info.
