its all moot anyways... I'm sure in a few months there will be several companies making alum covers and selling them cheaper than the oem ones

Actually it's the other way around where the company will make the aluminum cover and charge whatever the hell they want even if it's higher than OEM because they know that customers will have no other choice but to buy at the price since they don't want to buy another OEM plastic one.

OUCH! I hope the plastic one is cheaper.
This is probably one of the cases where you could order the existing part number with the part number that you have, and the superceded part will be the one to show up - basically, the bait and switch in the replacement parts business.
That's happened to me a couple times...walked into the parts counter with a part number, the guy hands me something not quite the same and says, "Oh that there's the "new" part..."
