3000GT VR4 owners to EVO X

I was kinda young when the 3000GT's were released, there's not a ton of information about these vehicles rather than the fact they were fast the MR version was capable of beating older Skylines. I really like the idea of AWS,AWD,TT on a 6. My main question is, would you say the 3000GT was better than an X considering the GT's age? Are there any similarities between the two? I'm talking strictly performance here guys; I'm not talking about 2 doors verse 4. I'm also curious about the GSX vs EVO X, like I said I was kinda young when these cars were owning pavement. LOL I was just entering high-school in 1999 (last good year for the Eclipse), I was still a year away from getting my licenses and had never seen a VR4 (I've still only seen 2 VR-4's to this day), very interesting cars that never got the credit they deserved!

I used to have a 1995 3000GT VR-4 in pearl white.

Performance wise, they can be made very fast but the downfault is that they break easily. 91-93 have the 5-speed trannies, which blow up easily. 94-99 are better years. They all, excluding '99, have lifter tick issues. They're heavy, unreliable and things WILL break on them.

Mine had DR500 turbo kit (13g turbos vs oem 9b's), DR Stage 3 clutch - 6 puck, 3" custom single exhaust, y-pipe from Tbody to i/c pipes, hks intake, denso fuel system, rc 550's. It was VERY fast, especially on 16 psi.

I can't compare my old one to a stock one vs Evo X because of the modification difference but my old one would spank my current Evo X, and i'm putting down 330 whp and 360 wtq (on a 85* day with 90+% humidity).

Some old pics.

Man the VR-4 was a sexy beast, I didn't know they were that unreliable... You never see them around anywhere, I've still yet to see a Starion for crying out loud? No one really knows weather this car will be the next eclipse or 3000GT http://autoshow.roadfly.com/wp-conte...mitsubishi.jpg

Needless to say it looks very similar to an EVO X/Eclipse converging. How does the VR-4 handle compared to the X?

Mine was lowered on springs. It handled similar to the Evo. It felt heavier around turns but it went where you wanted it to. Felt more RWD as well.

Yup,sne2040is right about tranny issues on earlier models. One of my friend had one and his car spent more time in the driveway than on the road because of the transmission. Also uf you wanna rebuilt one or get one new its going to cost you arm and leg

still hard for me to believe that a VR4 on lowering springs has the same handling properties as an evo x.

i have driven vr4's before and they are lead sleds......

very nice car by the way, pearl white is just a sick color

i think if you put the two on a track and really pushed the cars, I think you might see how good the ten really handles

Evo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3000GT
The handling isn't remotely close. My cousin had a very nice Stealth TT back in the day, but what passed for exceptional performance 15 years ago is just average at best now.

Race them stock vs. stock around a racetrack, and the 3000GT will get killed. The GSX wouldn't have a chance against either stock, but at least they had mod potential.

I came from a 94 VR-4, mildly modded. No just no, do not put them in the same sentence. The EVO X is in an entirely different world in terms of reliability, handling and modding.

I was in love with my vr-4 too, now I found true love. <3

OT correction: 94 was the last good year for the Eclipse/Talon

Very true, we had a very well-modded one to say the least at the road course in Pueblo and I lapped that car with just a turbo back on my EVO IX.

I was trying to sound nice when I made that comment....

I have seen some really clean VR4's but once again when you really push these evo's they will run circles around a VR4, if the VR4 went on about an 800 lb diet it would certainly help but the X's suspension is just sick....

I know the 3000GT is rather dated and the Eclipse is in serious need of an overhaul... I'm just trying to figure out where other Mitsubishi's stand against the X in comparison! The 3000GT was a computerized marvel for it's time, it had slews of technological wizardry to help separate it from the pack (much like EVO's do now)! I remember people considering the 3000GT as the Corvette killer (given it's generation). I'm not saying thats true due to the fact I've never driven one, although I'm curious about the car I just thought I'd ask those who know best.

Yeah, I doubt that as well. The awd on the X is so far beyond the one in the vr4.
