Gates311 Review - MODE Racing Double Adjustable Short Shifter

This review has been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. I received the MODE Racing double adjustable short shifter from Billy Brooks, Owner of MODE Racing, at MOD '09 this summer. Since then, I've been meaning to get this on the car but just recently had it done...wish I had installed it sooner, it's awesome!

Here's some brief info on the short shifter:

Quote:
The Short Throw Shifter is constructed from zinc-plated steel and attractive, sleek gloss black anodized billet aluminum. One of the major features of the MODE Racing Double Adjustable Short Throw Shifter is the adjustability of the shift knob height and throw with very little effort.

By moving the upper shifter shaft, the shift knob height can be adjusted, while the throw can be independently adjusted by moving the bottom ball. This allows for a throw adjustment of up to 15% compared to stock! The shifter is compatible with the factory shift knob or can be mated to your own custom or aftermarket shift knob that fits with the factory shifter.

The MODE Racing Double Adjustable Short Throw Shifter for the Mitsubishi EVO X is an extremely unique and a required item for any driver looking to get full potential out of their vehicle from daily driven street vehicles to high performance track cars. Each MODE Racing Double Adjustable Short Throw Shifter has been developed, engineered, and tested in the USA and is even featured on many race cars out on the track today.

Anyways....onto my experience with it in the car. The first time I drove the car on track with the MODE Racing short shifter was at Road America, which was a perfect testbed. I was out there last month for an open track day just having fun and taking it easy on my favorite track.

It's pretty sick that you can adjust the height AND the throw length of the MODE Racing short shifter independently! Gives you plenty of options. I have mine set at full height, and shortest throw. I like the shift knob as high up as possible so it's really nice to have that adjustability. Shifts are crisp and quite a bit shorter than stock, but not to the point where things get clunky or too short to find a gear.

With the OEM shift throws in the Evo X being overly long, it's nice to have something that shortens the shift and still keeps things smooth. I haven't had too much time with the MODE Racing Double Adjustable Short shifter yet, but I'm looking forward to the rest of this year with it for sure!

Here is a video of the car at Road America, you can see how crispy the shifts are! Thanks MODE Racing!

Isn't MODE the company that used to make parts for COBB... then COBB layed them off.

Looks like a nice piece

Ya, this looks an awful lot like the Cobb part.

Does this shift the shifter over to the left like some of the other ones? I like the taller feel, but the shorter throws and left offset of mine are worth dealing with the stubby feel.

Billy Brooks, owner of MODE, was an engineer at COBB before starting MODE Racing. He bought the rights to this part from COBB, which I believe he designed.

I'm not sure on cost, but you can email Billy at sales@moderacing.com until the website is live. I didn't do the install, but I don't think it's anything bad.

HB Speed carries these as well. I almost picked one up last time I was there but decided to hold off till I saw some reviews. Looks like I'm pretty much sold now.

We offer the shifter for sale and have plenty in stock.

Being local to Billy/MODE is nice. A nicer and smarter person I have yet to meet. I am glad to see that he got a good review from Ryan.
